Are you ready for the upcoming heat wave? From Monday, the temperatures rise to over 35 degrees, especially in the southwest and west it gets really hot. In addition, there is the increasing humidity, which will all sweat to us. What could be better than cooling down in your own pool? So that the bathing pleasure remains really refreshing, however, a little pool care is required. I know that you don't want to do anything at the heat, but don't worry - it's easy! With a simple kitchen aid - namely baking powder - bring your pool water in top form in no time. Sounds uncomplicated? Is it too!
What does baking powder do in the pool?
Baking powder, more precisely sodium bicarbonate, is a real all -rounder - not only in the kitchen, but also in your pool. Did you know that many commercial pool products that are used to increase alkalinity contain baking powder as the main active ingredient? So why not use pure baking powder in the pool?
If the alkalinity of your pool water is too low (e.g. after heavy rain), baking powder ensures that the balance is restored and the pH remains stable. A stable pH is crucial for clear water and pleasant swimming.
The ideal pH value is between 7.4 and 7.6. With the right alkalinity, this value remains stable, which has two advantages: the water is gently to the skin, and algae have fewer chances of spreading. Because algae feel particularly comfortable in unbalanced water. With baking powder in your pool, however, the water remains algae -free and crystal clear.
How to apply baking powder correctly in the pool
Test the alkalinity of your pool every day
Ideally, the pH value should be between 7.2 and 7.8 and the alkalinity between 110 and 150 ppm (parts per million) or mg/l. The TA value (total alkaline) is measured with TA test strips or an electronic pool tester. If your alkalinity value is lower, especially below 80 ppm, it is time to increase the alkalinity of the pool water.
How much baking powder do you need?
Baking powder is available in packs of up to 5 kg. Depending on the current alkalinity value of your pool, you need between 700 g and 4 kg baking powder.
How much baking powder you need depends on the size of your pool and the current alkalinity. The right amount is crucial!
The rule of thumb is: For 38,000 liters of water, you should use about 700 grams of baking powder to increase the alkalinity by 10 ppm. If your pH value is below 7.2, add 1.4 to 1.80 kilograms of baking powder.
If you are not sure how big your pool is, you can consult an online pool computer. Simply enter the corresponding data and you already know how much baking powder you need - without any complicated calculation.
If you are new to dealing with pool chemicals, start adding only half or three quarters of the recommended amount. After testing again, you can add more if necessary. Otherwise, you could change the sensitive pH too much and may have to add an acid to restore the balance.
Add the baking powder to the pool
Now it's time to get to: How do you bring the baking powder into the pool? It is best to gradually. First scatter half or three quarters of the calculated amount over the water surface - you should make large arches so that the powder is distributed well. Make sure that you do not use the baking powder on windy days, otherwise it can be easily blown away. Don't forget to wear gloves and safety glasses - it is safe!
How fast is baking powder in the pool?
After giving the baking powder into the water, it is said: have patience. Your pool water needsabout six hours, to distribute the sodium bicarbonate evenly - provided the filter system is running.
Between 6 and 24 hours after adding the baking powder you should be the pH and alkalinitytest again. If everything is in the green, nothing stands in the way of relaxing cooling.
Are there any risks when using baking powder in the pool?
While there is no direct risk when using baking powder in your pool, there are risks if the alkaline is too high or too low.
If you notice corrosion on ladders, tiles or other parts of your pool, this is most likely on a pH over a longer period of time. On the other hand, if you see limescale deposits or an accumulation around your pool equipment, this could be due to excessive alkalinity. This means that your water is hard.
The most important thing is to keep the alkalinity between 100 and 150 ppm and the pH value between 7.4 and 7.6 as often as possible. Test the pool water daily andAdjust the chemical values if necessary.
What about health risks?
A health risk could be that you get the baking powder in the eye when you put it in the pool on a windy day. That can be really uncomfortable! But apart from that, sodium bicarbonate is relatively safe. It has been used for thousands of years, most famous of the ancient Egyptians who itused for brushing your teethhave - just like we still do today!
You can see it like this: If it is safe enough to be used in cake, it will not be a problem for your swimming pool.
Baking powder in the pool water saves money
The best thing about baking powder is that it is often cheaper than special alkalinity. You can buy baking powder in large quantities, just like the brands in the pool requirement shop.
In addition, you can remain left for baking the cake or cleaning ofEigen -burned pansordirty tile jointsuse. So you not only save money, but also have a versatile helper in the household!
