Close the oven door again and set the temperature to 230 degrees. At this point, the water creates steam that dissolves oily stains. For example, your oven's self-cleaning function can cause unnecessary wear and damage to the appliance over time. Cleaning the back wall of the oven with ammonia – instructions
What you need:
- Ammonia
- Dishwashing liquid
- 1 pot of boiling water
- 1 scouring pad
- 2 containers suitable for the oven
Before we get started, a few important safety instructions:
- Since ammonia fumes can produce a strong smell, you should ensure that the windows are open, the exhaust fan is running and the room is well ventilated before starting work. If you are sensitive to the smell or have respiratory problems, you should wear a respirator. If you have sensitive skin, you should wear rubber gloves.
- Under no circumstances should ammonia and bleach-based cleaners be used together as their interaction can produce a toxic gas.
- Ammonia vapors are flammable. When cleaning a gas stove with ammonia, make sure the gas is turned off and the pilot light is extinguished before beginning the cleaning process.
Step-by-step instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 65 degrees to get started. Place a pot of water on the stove while the oven preheats.
- Once the oven has reached the desired temperature, turn it off. Add 500 – 700 ml of boiling water to a container that can be placed on the bottom rack of the oven and 250 ml of ammonia to an ovenproof container that can be placed on the top rack of the oven.
- Close the oven door and let the ammonia and water mixture sit in the oven all night. It is possible that the ammonia will escape through the oven vents, so you should ensure that your kitchen is adequately ventilated. To keep air circulating, you should leave the windows open and turn on either the range hood or exhaust fan.
- The next morning, open the oven door and if the smell is still present, let the oven ventilate for a few minutes.
- Remove the water and ammonia from the oven and mix a small amount of liquid dishwashing detergent in 1 liter of warm water. Then add the ammonia.
- To clean the back of the oven, first soak your scouring pad in the solution of ammonia and dishwashing liquid and then wipe the inside with the sponge.
