Clean your suitcase properly: The best tips for hard, soft and leather cases

Imagine coming home after a long trip, putting your suitcase on the bed and unpacking - and in doing so you spread a lot of invisible travel companions around your bedroom: bacteria, dirt and who knows what else. We show you how you can get your luggage ready for your next adventure trip in just four simple steps.

What you need:

  • Microfiber cloth
  • Vacuum cleaner with attachment
  • Disinfectant wipes
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Dishwashing liquid

Step 1: Wipe down wheels and handles

Start with the grip surfaces. Whether it's a telescopic handle or a handle, everything you touch during your trip should be thoroughly cleaned. Use a disinfectant wipe or an all-purpose cleaner. If your suitcase has wheels, don't forget them! Who knows what they've already picked up. Do you have a suitcase without wheels? Then pay special attention to the bottom of your luggage - it has probably had a lot of contact with the ground.

Step 2: Clean up the interior

Caught! Have you ever forgotten a pair of socks or an old T-shirt in your suitcase after a trip? Take the time to clear everything out of your suitcase - including the removable bags and laundry bags. You can clean these either in the washing machine or by hand in a bowl with detergent.

Step 3: Vacuum the interior thoroughly

Now the vacuum cleaner comes into use. Open your suitcase completely and give it a strong shake - this will help the coarse dirt fly out. Then vacuum all corners and edges thoroughly. Small cracks in which dust often hides should not be forgotten.

Step 4: Wipe inner lining

Take a damp microfiber cloth (just moistened with water) and use it to wipe down the entire lining of your suitcase, including all straps and buckles. If you have spotted stains in the fabric, mix a solution of one part detergent to five parts water and dab the affected areas. Then wipe it again with the water cloth - and your suitcase will be almost like new.

And now the outside area: hard shell, soft shell or leather?

Clean hard case

Luckily, hard-shell cases are pretty sturdy. A simple mixture of water and detergent is usually sufficient for cleaning. Dip a microfiber cloth into the solution and wipe down the outside of the case. Avoid scratching sponges to keep the surface beautiful. If you really want to score points, then polish the suitcase with a furniture wax or car wax - so it shines like the first day.

Polish up the soft-shell case

Soft-shell suitcases need a little more attention. Mix water with dish soap and work the solution into the material with a soft brush. For stubborn dirt, it's best to use a toothbrush - this will help you get into the deepest corners. Then wipe with a damp microfiber cloth. An upholstery cleaner spray helps with stubborn stains. Test it on an inconspicuous area first and then work it in with a soft brush. Leave on for five minutes, wipe with a wet cloth and let dry - voilà!

Clean leather bags gently

Leather bags require special care. Use as little water as possible to avoid damage. A dry microfiber cloth is often enough to remove dirt and dust. To polish, use a special leather cleaner and apply it carefully with a soft cloth. If you can't get rid of stains, you should consult a professional - because leather needs to be treated well.

And there you have it – your suitcase is ready for the next big trip! A clean suitcase not only looks good, it also gives you the peace of mind that your clothes and personal items are well protected.
