Faux fur is a popular and ethical alternative to real fur. It is made from synthetic materials such as polyester or acrylic that mimic the look and texture of animal fur. Faux fur is often used for clothing, accessories and home decor. However, just like real fur, it needs to be properly cleaned and cared for to keep it soft, fluffy and clean. Below we explain how you should wash faux fur - this is how you get your fake fur coat clean again!
Can you wash faux fur in the washing machine?
It is strongly discouraged to wash faux fur if the product states that it is dry clean only. The synthetic fibers used in the production of faux fur can be damaged by both water and detergents. In addition, washing and drying can cause the fur to lose its shape and texture, which is a disadvantage of the material.
Detergent and temperature for faux fur
Check the care instructions on the label of your faux fur jacket to see if it can be machine washedcan be washed, and then go to the next step.
- First, you need to prepare your faux fur clothing - you'll want to make sure the outside is facing in. This protects the fur. Machine wash one item at a time to reduce the chance of ruining the fur and to prevent lint from spreading.
- Make sure you set your washing machine according to the recommendations on the label. In most cases, instructions for faux fur products recommend washing the product on a gentle cycle and in cold water. If possible, use the setting on your washing machine that creates the least friction during the spin cycle. Now start your washing machine and add a small amount of a mild detergent. If you choose to add fabric softener, your clothes will smell, look, and feel better after washing.
- Put your faux fur garment in the washing machine alone, without any other clothing items. When washing the garment, it is strongly recommended to take an additional step, which is to put it in a special laundry net. This way it is much less likely that the fibers will breakloosen when washing.
- Take the faux fur out of the washing machine immediately when it is finished washing. Leaving your faux fur coat in the washing machine for an extended period of time can cause the faux fur to lose its shape, resulting in the garment not being as fluffy.
Dry faux fur properly
After washing the faux fur in the washing machine and removing it from the machine, shake it lightly to remove excess water. You can also pat the faux fur dry with a thick towel. Do not use heat to dry, let it drythe garmentAir dry by hanging it in an open place.
Never dry the imitation fur in the dryer. When the fibers of faux fur are exposed to the heat of a tumble dryer, they can melt, which can cause significant damage to the fibers. For the same reasons, avoid ironing as much as possible. However, if there are deep creases, you can try to remove them by ironing at low temperature or ironing with a cotton cloth.
Wash faux fur by hand
You should take extra care when cleaning some faux fur garments, such as a teddy coat or a faux fur collar. When it comes to cleaning faux fur, it's best to do it by hand. Use a large plastic container and add warm water and one to two tablespoons of a gentle detergent. After that, put the entire faux fur in the detergent solution and let it soak. Then hand wash it for 10 – 15 minutes.
Squeeze out as much soapy water as you can when you're done. Refill the container with fresh water. Rinse until there is no more soapy water left. You can then place the faux fur on a drying rack to dry. The fur should not be exposed to direct sun or heat. Drying can take between 24 and 48 hours.
Caring for faux fur and getting it fluffy again – tips
Comb the faux fur with a pet brush or a brush and comb specifically designed for faux fur. This removes tangles and knots and restores the fur's natural fluffiness.
You can smooth the fibers by mixing 500 ml of warm water with 1 teaspoon of hair conditioner in a separate bowl. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and then apply it to the fur. Use a soft-bristled brush to carefully detangle the fur. If fibers fall out while brushing, you are applying too much pressure. After brushing, wipe the area with a clean, white cloth dampened with water and then allow it to air dry.
It is important not to wash the faux fur too often as this could strip the hair's natural oils, causing the fur to become dry and matted. You should also store and hang it in a cool, dry place so that it retains its shape.
