Decorating with the napkin technique and decoupage – 24 ideas

Using popular napkin techniques and decoupage, you can create a wide variety of objects with a personal touch - whether for the house, the garden or the balcony or as a gift. From subtle colors to classic image motifs to playful patterns can be applied to candles, porcelain, trays, boxes, mirror frames, other decorative accessories and even small furniture. Depending on which item is being creatively designed, you should make sure that the selected motif fits into the living environment. Lots of inspiration here!

These are twosimilar methods of decorating, which are very popular among hobby hobbyists. Découpage is the French word for “to cut out”. In both techniques, cut-out image motifs are glued to a workpiece and painted over with several layers of varnish. The only difference is that the napkins are thinner and than decoupage paper. Almost all objects with smooth surfaces are suitable for both techniques, regardless of whether they are made of wood, porcelain, cardboard or plastic.

You will need the following craft materials:
– Originally designed paper napkins with quotes, sayings, flowers, etc.
– Special paper that you can buy at the craft store.
– Cutting tools – particularly sharp cuts can be made with the specially shaped scissors and scalpel.
– Brushes for decoupage and decoupage should be flat and sufficiently large.
– Solid adhesives. A thinner adhesive is also suitable for the napkin technique. After applying multiple layers of adhesive, it becomes weatherproof.

With these simple instructions you can easily put together a great table decoration in no time:

– The selected motifs are generously cut out using scissors or a scalpel (on a cutting surface).
– Fine cuts on flowers or tendrils are best made with pointed scissors.
– The surface is first cleaned thoroughly, then primed with a layer of adhesive varnish.
– The napkin is placed on top and repeatedly coated with adhesive varnish.
– A protective varnish comes at the end. Frequently used objects require two coats of varnish. Only after the first layer has dried (approx. 2 hours) is the second layer applied.
– Furniture can be beautifully covered with photocopies, wallpaper or even napkins.

Applying it with adhesive varnish and a brush definitely requires some practice. To ensure that the selected decorative objects later correspond to your ideas, it is advisable to try out both techniques first. We hope you enjoy crafting!
