Do you have to pre-cook baked potatoes?
Not necessarily. The real problem with preparing baked potatoes is that they are cooked whole and therefore naturally take a long time to cook. If you don't want to or can't wait that long, you can simply pre-cook the potatoes for about 10 minutes beforehand. This reduces baking time from an hour to just 20 minutes. The disadvantage here is that valuable vitamins are lost. Ultimately, however, it is up to you how you proceed.
Is the aluminum foil really necessary?
Baked potatoes are wrapped in aluminum foil and then cooked in this package. This is where the name of this dish comes from. But some people may worry that the aluminum could be harmful. In general, aluminum foil poses no danger as long as it does not come into contact with salt or acids. So if you wrap the potato plain, you don't have to worry. If you have seasoned them beforehand, it is better to avoid the foil and alternatively place them directly on the baking tray.

Cook baked potatoes in the oven – Prepare the potatoes
- The potatoes are cooked with the skin on (this means they retain more nutrients). For this reason, you must wash each potato well beforehand. Scrub (with a soft brush if necessary) the potato under running water.
- Take a fork or other sharp object and prick the potatoes in several places. This allows the hot baking air to reach the inside and the tuber cooks more quickly.
- Rub the potatoes with olive oil (about 1 teaspoon per piece).
- Wrap the potato tuber well with foil. The air inside should not be able to escape while the baked potatoes are cooking in the oven.
Bake the potatoes
- Preheat the oven to 220 degrees.
- Bake the potatoes for about an hour (for medium-sized potatoes).
- Use a toothpick to check whether the potato is cooked, like you would with a cake. But here the resistance is a sign that the tuber is still raw inside. However, if the stick goes through well, it is cooked and soft.
