This is easier than you might think!

How to make gelatin balls yourself

You need:

  • as small as possibleBalloons of any color
  • Chopsticks (e.g. shish kebab skewers)
  • Gelatinepulver
  • a fireproof bowl
  • a spoon
  • Grease (Beer)
  • kitchen paper
  • edible glitter, food coloring or other effects as desired
  • a cup or a piece of Styrofoam
  • Scissors
  • Blow thoseBalloonsin the desired size. You can also choose different sizes. Once you have the size you want, tie the balloons. Then add a second node. The aim of this is to push the air further forward and create a more rounded shape. Then insert a kebab skewer through the knot. But be careful not to burst the balloon.
  • Prepare theGelatinefrom the powder and cold water. For three to four balloons you need about 4 tablespoons of cold water and 2 tablespoons of gelatin. In principle the ratio is 2:1, i.e. 2 parts water and one part gelatin. Mix both ingredients and heat this thick mixture briefly in the microwave until it is more liquid (approx. 10 seconds).
  • Now you can glitter, food coloring, add sprinkles and other things. If you want to make the balls a specific color, keep in mind that gelatin is naturally yellowish, which will also affect the final color. So you'll probably need to experiment a bit with the mixes.
  • Using the kitchen paper, spread a thin layer of fat on each balloon. This makes it easier to remove the balloons from the balls later.
  • Now dip the balloon into the liquid gelatin so that it is thinly covered. The area with the knot should not be submerged. However, the closer you get with the gelatin, the better. Finally, you can take the balloon with you againGlitter or other decorationssprinkle to enhance the effect.
  • Place the finished balloons upright in a cup or stick them in Styrofoam without letting them touch each other. Let them set overnight, or at least 12 hours with a layer of gelatin. More than two coats, which should cure for 24 hours, are not recommended.
  • Once the gelatin balls have dried well and hardened, you can remove the balloons. To do this, simply cut off the knots with scissors. The balloon should then collapse and detach itself from the ball. If you accidentally press a ball in, don't be alarmed, because the gelatine is fortunately quite elastic and can be pushed back again.
  • Prepare the decorations a day or two before use and store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Make bubbles without skewers

As with other things, the method of production can vary. You can also use a brush instead of kitchen paper to coat the balloons with oil. But be careful not to apply too much fat. You can also rub off the excess oil afterwards with kitchen paper or a clean cloth so that only a thin layer remains.

Skewers are also not absolutely necessary for making gelatin balls if you have inflated enough round balloons. Then you can simply hold it by the knot and dip it into the gelatin. To dry, simply place them on a raised grid (e.g. grill rack) so that the knot is facing down and between the grid bars. But this is a little more complicated, so the skewers are the more convenient option.
