Wishbone Chair – The iconic Hans Wegner chair with a unique Scandinavian design

Hans Wegner's name is synonymous with typical Danish design around the world, and his seemingly simple designs contributed to the worldwide recognition of Scandinavian modern style. The Wishbone Chair remains popular for its authentic expression of this Scandinavian design. The factory has been in production since the 1950s. Although its look is similar to most Danish furniture, the chair has a surprising history that finds inspiration in other cultures. The series was inspired by portraits of Danish merchants sitting on Chinese chairs from the Ming Dynasty.

The Wishbone Chair at a glance

Simple, clean and straight-lined, the Wishbone chair has presented itself for decades and is perhaps Hans J. Wegner's most celebrated design. He designed the chair in 1949 for Carl Hansen & Son, while in 1950 the company started producing this beautiful piece of furniture has started.

The son of a shoemaker, Wegner began as a teenage apprentice with carpenter HF Stahlberg before studying at the Copenhagen School of Applied Arts and the Danish Design School. There he was able to refine the characteristics of his style, often called organic functionality. Over the course of his career, he designed more than 500 different chairs, of which more than 100 went into mass production.

The designer opened his furniture workshop in 1908. In the early days he made custom-made furniture and gradually began producing smaller lines of his most popular products. So the Wishbone Chair has been in continuous production since 1950 and was made with the same 14 parts, requiring hundreds of different steps and approximately three weeks of preparation. Modern technology is used today, but in the early days everything was pretty much done by hand.

During the manufacturing process, the back and legs are sanded to give them the curvature that makes this chair so beautiful and iconic. The Y part or the so-called wishbone that stands on the back of the chair is another defining feature. It's made of strong plywood and fits into a groove in the back of the chair.

Once the pieces are attached to each other, the entire structure is sanded by hand. This is followed by one of the final processes – weaving. Each handwoven seat is made from more than 12 meters of rope. The Wishbone Chair, also known as the Y Chair, combines a hand-woven seat and a steam-bent frame. The chair, an undisputed modern icon, was the highlight of a series of chairs from the 1940s.
