Design in the courtyard: Multifunctional garden tables with built -in flower boxes in a Chinese school

The size of the available terrain is very limited in many Asian countries. Even public buildings such as schools have to be built compact. In order to have more usable space for the classrooms, the architects do without a large school yard. Instead, inner courtyards are designed at most schools. The talented architects from Da Landscape were commissioned to transform such a courtyard into a modern urban oasis. They asked themselves what the outdoor area was actually used for and then tried to design a concept that meets the needs of the students.

Design minimalist courtyard: create spacious and functional outdoor use

Before the renovation, theHof planted. The distribution of the trees and plants on the available area was unfavorable. The plants stood in the way of the students and prevented the free movement. There were also no seating, so that the children had to eat their buns standing standing in the lunch break. The architects have therefore decided to completely newly created the outdoor area. When designing, they made three goals: the classrooms that looked at the courtyard should be protected from the strong sun rays, the students should be able to move freely in the courtyard and the furniture should fulfill several functions. For this purpose, several garden tables were designed with integrated flower haules and manufactured according to customer dimensions.

With the ulterior motive for maximum comfort, the architects have decided to distribute the garden tables in the four corners of the courtyard. In this way, there is enough space in the middle that enables the free movement in the courtyard. At the same time, the tables offer sufficient seats for one class. So the lessons can take place outside in summer. Optionally, the children can sit comfortably during the lunch break and eat their buns or borrow a book from the library and read it in the fresh air.

Succulent, ground cover and trees were skilfully combined

The planting of theBig flower potmade a big challenge. On the one hand, the outdoor area should look like a green oasis, on the other hand it should be easy to care for. The task was commissioned by landscaping architects that planted local ground cover, flowers, perennials and trees. The plants were distributed so that the high perennials and trees offer sun protection for the classrooms. The flower pots in the middle of the outdoor area, on the other hand, were planted with sun -loving ground cover.

All tables, chairs and flower pots were made of stainless steel so that they can defy sun, rain and snow without any problems. The material is extremely resistant, durable and easy to care for, so that it is ideal for use outdoors.

The perfect urbane oasis

All classrooms and rooms that look at the courtyard have high glass sliding doors, which create a seamless transition between inside and outside. The border between nature and architecture merges and the children can relax in the midst of unsuccessful perennials and shrubs. It is the perfect urban oasis where unconditional modernity meets functionality.

Incidentally, the architects also thought about the lighting. Several metal table lamps are mounted on the garden tables. They provide gentle light on afternoons in winter and better bring the plants to their own.

The architects completely transformed the courtyard of a school. Clever spatial distribution, multifunctional furniture and of course many local plants make the outside area a casual retreat where the students can relax, exchange them or recharge their batteries. In the summer months it is possible that the lessons take place outdoors. The plentiful planted garden in small format also offers sun protection for the classrooms.
