Modular shelving system for modern nomads

With more and more people living in small spaces these days, storage should be creative, which doesn't necessarily mean a modular shelving system has to look bad. London-based designer Leonid Davydov worked with a team of experts to design a customizable, space-saving and modular shelving system called “Dotdotdot.Frame”. Made from ash wood, the system is designed to give people endless customization options. It only protrudes 4 cm from the wall, so it doesn't take up much space. So if you have to stay in a tight quarter, you can rely on such an adaptable modular shelving system. Just continue reading our article to find out more about it.

A practical modular shelving system to take with you

You can use the rectangular wooden frame as a wall shelf by attaching it or simply leaning against it. Small connecting pins fill the holes and hold the accessories in place like a modular shelving system without any additional tools. However, the base of the shelving system should touch the floor in both cases. TheDesign Regalcan be purchased in ready-made sets or as separate pieces.

The Dotdotdot.FrameDesigner Regalmeasures 2 x 1 meter (H x W) and has a total of 96 holes distributed along the frame, each of which can accommodate the available modules. The current selection of modules includes dowels, shelves, mirrors, pinboards and blackboards. These offer you many options for configuring your own furniture. Even better, you can combine multiple frames side by side to create a larger modular shelving system, so you can cover an entire wall with these wall shelves if you need a whole lot of storage areas.

As mentioned above, the construction is made of solid ash wood. It makes all wooden components so robust and resilient that they can withstand almost any weight. The high shelf basically allows objects to be inserted into holes. If you're up to the task, you can create your own modular shelving system with a little creativityassemble for home. Simply connect the storage modules to the wooden frame and add various shelves, hooks and hangers to store your personal belongings. These can vary from clothing accessories to shoes or other everyday items.

The story behind it

The designer grew up in Kazakhstan, where he played with a construction-set-like toy made of perforated metal pieces called a shkolnik (pupil). At the age of 17, he left secondary school and moved to Beijing. There he studied Mandarin Chinese and founded a company that connected Chinese manufacturers and external companies. Along the way, Leonid realized that he wanted to design things himself and accordingly moved to London. He then completed a degree in product design from the prestigious Central St Martins.

During his undergraduate studies, Davydov came up with the idea for an adjustable modular wooden shelving system that functions like an oversized builder. Like his childhood, he simply assembled the various holes and pegs to form a modular shelving system. Small hidden silicone rings hold the dowels in place by creating friction between the pin and the beam. This allows you to get the connecting pins out by slowly tightening them. There are fifty available just in case customers lose a few.

Combination of multifunctionality and design

The wooden pieces can be put together in countless ways. These easily detach from each other so they can travel from room to room and place to place. The designer says that in the last three years, at the age of 33, he has moved more than 20 times. He is now with a wife and child and has a manufacturing business in London. This consists of a six-person team who work on their modular creations. The startup is currently shipping across Europe, and Davydov reports that U.S. availability is imminent.

The frames, shelves and rods are made from sustainable oak and are sold á la carte and in pre-configured designs that are anchored to a wall with steel fixings. A modular shelving system with two wooden hooks and a round bulletin board, as shown here, is also available along with other options. You can also purchase this including additional hooks and a round board or mirror. A slim, freestanding version of the system is made from oak finished in a powder coated finishSteel baseis used. The design comes with two hooks, a notice board and a steel shelf.

The designer shelf was developed with the aim of improving the versatility of traditional storage furniture and creatively involving the user. The challenge was finding the right proportions so you could hang your accessories both horizontally and vertically. This was important to keep functionality fluid and elements to change according to the owner's needs and whims. Davydov also offers customized versions viaDot Bespoketo. He already has a Kickstarter campaign for.System, where he created a freestanding storage cabinet with modular accessories.
