“Black Doves” on Netflix: You’ve never seen Keira Knightley as ice cold (and great!) as she is in this thriller series

“Black Doves” on Netflix is the coolest spy series you can still stream in 2024

Forget, and all other thriller series! Because from then onDecember 5, 2024takes overon Netflix in“Black Doves”the command. In the miniseries she plays a role in which one sees the “Pirates of the Caribbean” and of courseactress has never seen like this before. Knightley makes “Black Doves” together with Ben Whishaw (“The Perfume”) an absolute must-watch in December 2024.

“Black Doves” on Netflix: That’s what the miniseries on Netflix is about

Helen Webb's life seems perfect: she is married to the British Defense Minister, who has a chance of becoming Prime Minister, has two adorable children and also takes care of representative tasks. You think. Her husband thinks. Thinks the audience.

However, Helen Webb leads more than a double life, at least two: she has a passionate onestarted with a man named Jason, but he was shot dead by a sniper right in the middleis murdered. Like two other people who at first glance have nothing to do with Jason. But of course they are somehow connected and know something that could throw the entire British government into chaos.

Helen is married to Wallace Webb, Defense Secretary of Great Britain.

Didn't I write about several double lives? Correct. Because when Helen finds out about her lover's murder, she swears revenge. What sounds pathetic is Helen's seriousness, because: Helen isn't actually called Helen. Plus, she's an agent and knows exactly how to get revenge.

Remarkable: Helen, who I'll just continue to call that here and who gets assignments from a woman named Reed, doesn't work for a foreign country, but always for the “highest bidder”. For whom she steals the secrets from her husband's laptop? – Unclear. What is clear, however, is that Helen wants the killer of her affair dead. Because she sees red and mixes emotions with business, Reed puts an old acquaintance at her side: Sam, whose job description can best be described as “triggerman”. Sam and Helen set out together, find new friends, unusual alliances and old corpses by chance and are very close to plunging Great Britain into absolute chaos on Christmas Eve. And it's a fast ride, I swear to you.

“Black Doves” is onethat you have to see. The story is flawless, the cast is phenomenal. The fact that the series takes place around Christmas, the contemplative time, and Keira Knightley sometimes stumbles through London's Borough Market covered in blood, puts the (English) crown on the whole thing. The miniseries hits so many hooks in six episodes that you can't guess until the end who is actually playing cat and mouse with each other or who is casually sawing on the British Prime Minister's chair with a chainsaw. Because: “Black Doves” is only about politics in passing. But that's what makes the episodes so exciting: If you as a viewer understand how something is connected to whom and who actually has the cards in play where, your mouth will inevitably remain open.

“Black Doves” is like a really good one in its style-Film, but the series - unlike the story about 007 - focuses on a woman, Keira Knightley, as a spy. Thanks to “Black Doves”, the fact that mothers cannot be contract killers has finally been clarified once and for all.

“Black Doves” is the perfect, suspenseful entertainment for the weeks before Christmas, when betweenandeveryone gets a little boring. Promise: With “Black Doves” even the most dilapidated Santa sits upright on the edge of the sofa because the series is just so exciting. That it is infrom “Black Doves” snows more than here? A gift, because blood spatter in the snow doesn't really create a festive atmosphere.

“Black Doves”: Why is the series called that?

Of course, the ornithology fans among you know this: They are real, the “Black Doves”. In German they are called black fruit pigeons and live alone or in pairs, only sometimes in small groups (Helen/Helen + Sam), in Papua New Guinea.

“Black Doves” on Netflix: Who is playing?

Keira Knightley () plays Helen Webb. To be honest: The 39-year-old actress hasn't performed so well since “Atonement”. Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) appears as her sidekick as Sam, Helen’s husband Wallace is played by Andrew Buchan (), Sarah Lancashire (“Happy Valley”) takes on the role of spy mastermind Reed.

“Black Doves”: start date and trailer

All six episodes of “Black Doves” will stream on Netflix from December 5, 2024.

Should you see “Black Doves”?

Simple answer: absolutely. Because despite everything else that flickers across my screen (and that's a lot), in the case of “Black Doves” I can say with a clear conscience: This series is great. In the six episodes there are no stupid storylines or useless banter, here people speak tacheles and throw rockets.

Sure, it's not really funny, but the friendly relationship between Helen and Sam leaves enough room for very dry humor and irony. If you ask me, Netflix gave its subscribers an early Christmas present with “Black Doves,” because this miniseries stands out from the streaming offering like the poinsettia on the darkest night. With that in mind: Merry Christmas, you little doves!
