Have you ever run into a garment in the washing machine or the fabric has turned? No problem - us too. So that such nasty surprises do not happen, the laundry should always be sorted before washing in the washing machine. Because as beautiful as the idea is - simply put the whole laundry pile in the machine at once, unfortunately does not work.
But how exactly should you separate your laundry? We'll tell you what you have to look out for while laundry to avoid discoloration and the like.
How is laundry properly sorted?
Basically, it is recommended to sort laundry according to three different criteria:
- After the type of textile
- Color
- After the washing program
White and light clothing, for example, should always be washed separately from dark parts in order to avoid coloring the textiles. But not only the color plays a role when washing.
The type of textile, i.e. the material from the clothes, and the washing temperature also play a role. For example, cannot be washed together with cotton and textiles that cancel only 30 degrees, not with which that is washed at 60 degrees.

#1: Sort laundry by color
In order to avoid discoloration, clothing should first be sorted according to colors. Dark and color -intensive laundry should never end up in the washing machine with light or white laundry, as the dark textiles lose color and the brightness could thus discolour.
Basically, you should only wash similar colors together. It is recommended to sort the laundry according to the following color groups:
White laundry: | White, off-White, nude, beige |
Bunt Breaks Bright: | Pastel colors such as light blue, pink, light gray, lilac, mint, yellow |
Colorful laundry dark: | Strong colors such as blue, green, pink, purple, red |
Blackwunde: | Dark gray, black, brown |
If not enough laundry comes together, you can also summarize the dark colored clothing and the black tief and wash at lower temperatures.

Different-colored patterned parts, for example a white-red checkered shirt, should best be washed by hand washing for safety in order to avoid coloring.
And new items of clothing should always be washed separately, as they can lose color the first time they were washed.
Tipp:By the way, you save the most time when laundry sorting when you prefer to sort the dirt laundry immediately after wearing. This is best done with a laundry sorter who has several different compartments, for example a compartment for light laundry, one for dark laundry and another for colorful wash.
#2: Sort laundry by textile type
Linen should not only be sorted in color, but also according to the type of text. Sensitive materials need a different care than robust, solid fabrics such asOr towels, art fibers in turn a different than cotton or.
It is therefore recommended to separate the laundry into the following categories:
1. Hand/gentle laundry
This includes all extremely sensitive materials such as wool, and other natural fibers. The textiles should best be cleaned by hand.
In some cases, the textiles can also be washed in the washing machine. For example, if the machine has a special, wool or silk wash program.
Reading tip:
2. Finewear
Finewear includes all textiles whose fibers are quite sensitive and could be destroyed in the "normal" wash through the friction in the washing machine.
These are, for example, blouses made of synthetic or viscose, microfiber textiles, fabric coats and pure natural substances.
Tipp:Particularly sensitive items of clothing, such as with applications or lace decorations, should be in a laundry network (is available here at Amazon)* to be given in order not to be damaged in the washing machine.
3. Easy -care laundry
As the name suggests, all materials that are uncomplicated in cleaning are meant by easy-care laundry: polyester, polyamide, t-shirts, socks, shirts and blouses made of mixed tissue.
4. Cooking and colored laundry
Finally, there are the textiles that are counted towards cooking and colored clothing. These parts are extremely robust and therefore usually tolerate very high washing temperatures.
These include: towels, bed linen and underwear made of cotton, tea towels and plaster flaps, but also white, undyed linen.

#3: Sort laundry by washing temperature
In addition to color and textile type, the washing temperature should also be observed. If a piece of clothing is washed too hot in the washing machine, it can run in or get out of the mold.
In order to find out which temperature the respective part can be cleaned, you should take a look at the manufacturer's care label.
As a rule, it is recommended to sort the laundry as follows:
Hand wash or special washing program:Silk, wool and other very sensitive substances should be cleaned as cold or at a very low temperature, because here the danger is particularly high that the clothes are incorporated or the fibers are damaged.
30 Grad:Slightly staining clothes such as jeans and sensitive fabrics (e.g. from), but also bras should only be washed to 30 degrees. The low temperature is also suitable for slightly dirty clothing.
40 Grad:Most items of clothing are washed in the machine at 40 degrees. Both blouses and shirts as well as, T-shirts, fabric trousers and sweaters usually tolerate this temperature well.
60 Grad:Underwear, sheet suits, towels andCan be washed at 60 degrees without hesitation. You should be careful with underwear with lace trim or models made of delicate fabrics. They often cannot be washed so hot and, if in doubt, should be cleaned at a lower washing temperature.
90 Grad:Heavily dirty cotton bed linen as well as plaster flaps and tea towels can be put in the washing machine during cooking washing. The high temperature reliably kill germs.

Sort laundry by degree of contamination
After you have sorted your laundry by color, type of textile and washing temperature, you should take a quick look at the individual clothing before landing in the washing machine.
Because very dirty clothing, for example pants with mud orshould be sorted out and washed separately or pretreated before machine washing. Incidentally, the amount of the detergent depends on how polluted textiles are.
Clothing that is hardly dirty can also be cleaned at a lower temperature. This saves energy and also protects the fibers.

Mixed underwear: What if not enough laundry comes together?
Everyone who lives alone or have lived alone knows the problem: if you always sort your clothes exactly by color, type of textile and washing temperature, a full wash load would never come together. Unless you have a very full wardrobe.
The solution: mixed underwear. Mixed linen means something like mixing different colors or materials in a wash load. A bright wool sweater does not necessarily have to be washed with other wool-pieces, but can also load together in the washing machine with other sensitive, bright clothing.
As far as the colors are concerned, it can be mixed a little. Colorful textiles in red, blue, green or pink can also be added to Black Forage. Even dark and bright textiles can be washed together - but only if the clothes do not lose any color.
You can test whether a textile stains stained by putting it in lukewarm water for about an hour. The water turns, then it should be separated or only washed with pieces of the same color. Tip: color and dirt catcher (Here at Amazon)* Catch - as the name reveals - open color particles in the water and thus prevent discoloration.
