The Federal Ministry of Health welcomes a debate on the possible introduction of compulsory vaccination against measles, but the discussions are far from over. A month ago, the World Health Organization reported that the number of measles cases increased threefold in 2018 compared to 2017. For this reason, preventive measures have already been taken: At the moment, parents whose children attend daycare centers are obliged to seek advice on the various vaccination options.
Nevertheless, a fortnight ago it was found in Hildesheim that around 80 unvaccinated children attend schools. The health department has issued a temporary ban on the children entering the school, and after two weeks they are now allowed to go back to school. One girl is now suffering from measles, the others are healthy. The authorities are convinced that the ban on school entry prevented the spread of the dangerous disease in the region.
In contrast to the government, the Greens see compulsory vaccination as problematic and are skeptical. Detailed advice is available for themaddresses the problems, in question. Ultimately, vaccination is very important not only for the individual but also for the community. It is a sign of solidarity because the more healthy people are vaccinated, the more those who cannot be vaccinated will be protected. These include, for example, small babies, for whom the disease is particularly dangerous, but also adults with immune deficiency diseases.
Also the German oneSociety for children– and youth medicine had recommended compulsory vaccination in view of the increase in measles cases in recent years. The disease is dangerous and could potentially lead to serious late complications and even death. Particularly life-threatening is encephalitis, which can sometimes occur several years later and for which there is no treatment.
