A beard is the perfect thingAccessory for many costumesand can be wonderfully made yourself. And now that Halloween is approaching, a few DIY instructions can come in handy. No matter whether you want to dress up as a dwarf, Viking, pirate or lumberjack - you can make the accessory from a wide variety of materials and we'll show you how it works. Paper, wool, and faux fur are a few of the things you can use to make beards. So put your craft materials together and you're ready to make your own beard!
Make a beard for Zeus out of white felt
This white, curly beard is intended for a Zeus costume, but it can work just as wellfor a Santa Claus, Santa Claus, dwarf and other costume ideas can be used. Also, you don't necessarily have to use white color when making the beard. You have free choice and can adapt it to your costume. Here's how to make a fake beard like this:
- thin felt
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Hot glue and gun
- Ribbon or string
First you have to make the beard stencil, which you will then design additionally. To do this, take a piece of felt and fold it in half. Then use the pencil to draw half of the beard shape at the fold and then also the mouth. By folding, you ensure that both sides of the beard become equal. Cut out the beard and then the hole for the mouth. Then you can make the “hair” for the beard. To do this, cut out small strips for the mustache and glue them above the mouth. For the rest of the beard you will need longer and wider strips, which you screw in like corkscrews and stick vertically to the beard template in stages until it is completely covered.
Make your own dwarf beard out of wool
How about you get a beardCraft wool? It is ideal for various costumes, whether for a dwarf or as a Viking beard. Depending on which hair color you want to use, you also choose the color of the wool. And since the choice of wool is really wide these days, you are guaranteed to find the color you imagine. If you want to make this beard, you will need:
- Wool in any color
- Yarn of the same color
- Nadel
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Pins, clamps, clasps or similar
Make the basic construction for the beard
Cut three strands of wool to 92 cm each, put them together and knot them together at one end. Then braid them into a braid and knot the other end too. With this braid you get the base for the beard. As a precaution, this should be at least 63 to 76 cm long. Take the braid and wrap one of the two ends around one of your ears. The resulting loop should not be too tight so that the beard is comfortable to wear later. Then sew the loop in place with a few hand stitches. Then place the finished loop back around your ear and repeat the whole thing on the other side. The braid should run over your chin. You can cut off the excess.
Hang the braid back around your ears and place the piece you just cut over your mouth like a mustache to determine the correct position and length. Temporarily pin the braid in place with pins or clip it with clasps or something else to hold it in place and then sew the ends in place as well.
Make the mustache
Now think about how long the two side braids should be. For the beard in the example, wool threads with a length of 140 cm were chosen. How many of these you need depends on how thick you want your mustache to be. The example mustache consists of 20 threads. With the 140 cm you end up with a mustache about 12 cm long on each side and braids about 30 cm long.
Put all the wool threads together and tie the middle with a piece of yarn. From this center point, measure the desired length for the mustache in both directions and tie these points together with yarn. Then take the beard base from before and sew both the middle of the mustache and both ends to it. Then you can braid the hanging threads into braids.
Make the beard
All that's missing is the rest of the beard. And for this one you need lots and lots of wool threads. Again, think about how long you would like the beard to be (in the example 92 cm), double the length and trim the threads. It is better to choose a longer length that you can then shorten. Also keep in mind that the beard should be tapered at the end and the sides need to be trimmed either way.
You get the beard hair by knotting two or three threads at the same time at the base of the beard (depending on how thick you want the beard to be). First place the two or three threads together and then bring the ends together to create a loop in the middle. Then place the loop around the base of the beard and, as shown in the instructions, tie the threads around the base by pulling the ends through the loop. Continue this way until the beard is finished. Finally, you can braid a third braid in the middle.
Make a beard out of paper for the lumberjack costume
Theclassic lumberjacksis known for his full beard and you can make it out of simple craft paper, among other things. Whether you're a brunette, a redhead or a blonde - with the right color of paper you can create a beard that suits your needs. And for this purpose you don't even need any special materials. You probably already have everything you need at home.
- Craft cardboard in any color
- black felt-tip pen
- Glue
- wooden spatula
Take your craft cardboard and cut out a mustache and a full beard. To make the two elements stand out even better later, you can outline the beards with the black felt-tip pen. Then glue the mustache onto the full beard. When drawing the full beard, you can make the top edge curved so that a small hole is created for the mouth when you glue it together later. Finally, glue the wooden spatula to the back of the beard to create a handle. Alternatively, you can also use an elastic band and tie the beard around your head or attach it to your ears like a mask.
Tipp:If you also like the white beard from the picture above, you can make the beard with cotton wool. To do this, first proceed as for the brown beard, then design the cardboard base with cotton balls.
Make your own beards – fake beard made of faux fur
A fake beard made of artificial fur looks pretty authentic. This material can be used particularly well for a dwarf beard. But it also fits other costume ideas and you can easily adjust the length of the beard to suit your wishes or the planned costume. This is what you need if you want to make a beard like this:
- 1 piece of faux fur
- Textile scissors
- Hot glue and gun
- Rubber band
This is how you can make the beard: Cut the faux fur to a larger size than you want the beard to be. It is important that you be careful not to cut the fur when cutting. To do this, spread the fur hairs apart and cut along the free line between the hairs that is created. Then cut the faux fur so that it tapers at the bottom (or choose any other beard shape you like). Cut another curve at the top. But also add sideburns (seen in the picture instructions above).
Now you need a hole for the mouth. Again, remember to put the fur hair aside first and not accidentally cut it off. The hole should be about 1 inch from the top (or measure the distance between the wearer's nose and mouth to determine the correct distance) and be large enough to allow for easy breathing.
If you now attach a piece of fur about 2.5 cm in size slightly above the edge of this hole, the beard will look a little more real. Finally, all you have to do is measure the correct length for the elastic band and then stick it to the sideburns. You're done and you can do thisCostume with beardproudly display.
Make your own beard with paper plates and paper
If you still have a few paper plates at home, you can also use them if you want to make a beard. This craft idea is so simple that even children can join in. This example does not have a mustache, which is typical of the beards of Irish goblins. So how about dressing up as the so-called Leprechaun? You can also get one to matchWear a wig.
- paper plate
- red craft paper
- Glue
- Rubbers
- punch
- Scissors
Cut the plate in half and cut out the bottom of one of the halves to create the edge of the plate. Hold this edge to your face and shorten it a little if necessary (the ends should be slightly below the ears). Punch holes in both ends and tie the rubber bands tightly. You then use the loops you receive to attach the beard to your ears like a mask.
Now cut out equal strips from the craft paper. Bend this at one end using a pin and glue the other end to the edge of the plate. You will then need shorter strips for the second row and if you want, you can then add a third, shorter row. By the way, instead of strips of paper, you can also use wool threads, pipe cleaners and other materials if you want to make this beard.
