Book covers are a really useful thing. Aside from protecting the book from external influences, they can also be really pretty to look at and turn any book into a unique piece of jewelry. Everyone knows the foil that is used to wrap theTextbooks for schoolused. But that's far from the only material you can use. For the following instructions, paper and fabric are also used and decorated in a very individual and arbitrary way. Get inspired and give your books beautiful covers because we'll show you how you can make a book cover yourself.
Make your own book cover – This is how a book is covered with paper
Before you start designing, you should of course first know how to cover a book. This is beautifully illustrated in the instructions above. Paper is particularly easy to work with. If the book is wrapped, you can contact theMake decorationand create any patterns and motifs.
Make your own book cover with colors
A wide variety of motifs and patterns can be created using simple paints. For the first example, you will still need paper tape to tape off different areas on the envelope. You can create any design you want when designing the book cover.
Simply apply the tape and paint the free areaswith acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry briefly and remove the adhesive tape. Repeat these steps until you are happy with your design.
Make your own paint splashes on the book cover
It's even quicker and easier to get splashes of color on your envelope. To do this, you can pick up the paint using any tools: brushes of different sizes or a toothbrush, for example for finer splashes. Pick up paint with the brush and tap it onto another brush or pen above the envelope. Design any areas when you make the book cover yourself this way. If you are using a toothbrush, simply run your finger over the bristles near the surface of the poultice to allow the splashes to fall onto the poultice.
Tipp:Come on a black backgroundNeon colors are particularly effective.
Make and paint the book cover with a homemade stamp
A piece of wood, string and paints - that's all you need if you want to make and design a book cover yourself in this interesting way. Wrap the string several times around the piece of wood and tie it tightly together. Paint the side where there is no knot with any acrylic paint and thenwith the stampcan be transferred to the book. You can always change direction and either design the entire book or, as in the example, cover one half diagonally with paper and only stamp the other. Start with the lightest color and end with the darkest.
Washi-Tape
A lot can be done with this versatile craft material. On the one hand, you can use it when you open your book to hold the cover in place. On the other hand, you canwith washi tapeCreate beautiful patterns and even motifs in a pixel look. All you need is a little imagination. Since the adhesive tape is available in a wide variety of colors and designs, you are spoiled for choice!
Book cover made of fabric with and without sewing
No-sew idea
A fabric cover is particularly durable and hard-wearing and is therefore a great way to protect your valuable book from external influences (except moisture). For our first guide you mustdon't even sew. Since glue is used instead of a seam, you should just be careful not to stain the book with glue while working. Here's how you can make this type of book cover yourself:
- Substance
- Hot glue or textile glue
- Scissors
- Buttermesser
- optional: spray adhesive
Cut a piece of fabric that is approximately 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) larger on all sides than the opened book. The following applies: It's better to have more than too little, because you can always cut it off later. If the fabric is wrinkled or wrinkled, we recommend ironing it. If you want, you can tape the fabric to the book. This will give you a firmer book cover that won't slip. However, if you plan to cover textbooks or only use the cover temporarily, skip this step:
Spread the fabric out and mark the center (where you want the spine of the book to be). On a surface, first spray the back of the book and place it on the right side of the fabric. The spine of the book is on the center line. Now spray the front of the book, unfold it and glue the fabric in place.
If youdon't want to stick, simply position the book in the middle of the fabric. Then cut the protruding part on the spine of the book on the left and right.
For sticking: Put hot glue on the long side that sticks out, fold it over and stick it to the book. Then repeat this step with the two shorter sides at the top and bottom.
Would you like the fabricDon't stick it directly to the book, fold the long side over and clamp it temporarily. Place glue between the layers of fabric in the two outer corners and press the two layers together. Now mark the places on the short pages where the folds will be when you fold them inwards and take the book away. Fold the sides and iron the fold. Put the book back, fold the fabric inwards and glue it in the corner where the fabrics of the long and short pages lie on top of each other (in the corners).
Repeat the steps with the other side too. Now only the two pieces of fabric sticking out on the spine of the book remain. Simply insert these into the cavity of the spine of the book. You can use a butter knife or any other object to do this. If you want, you can also fix this piece of fabric with a little glue.
Sew book cover
- Substance
- Sewing machine
- The stick part
Place the piece of fabric in front of you (left side up) and the opened book on top of it. Measure a distance of approx. 1.3 to 2 cm at the top and bottom and approx. 9 to 10 cm to the right and left. Mark the spaces and then cut the fabric. Fold the edges over to about 1/4 inch and pin them in placeand sewa hem.
Place the book on the fabric and fold over the right and left pages. Pin the fabrics in place, but make sure there is enough space to close the book and cover. Sew the two layers together along the hem to create the book cover pockets.
Make your own book cover out of felt with an owl
The advantage of making your own book covers out of felt is that you can decide for yourself whether you prefer to glue or sew the material. The fact that it can only be glued is an advantage, especially if you want to decorate the envelope with motifs, as in the example above. Gluing saves a lot of time. Learn how to make this book cover yourselfwith an owl:
- Felt in any color
- Embroidery thread if you want to seworGlue if not
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Buch
- Template (see end of article)
Print out the owl template, cut out the individual elements and transferthe felt materials. Also cut out these elements and sew them together as follows: On a small square, first sew the owl's body, then the belly, the wings and the large circles for the eyes, then the whites for the eyes and the beak and finally the black pupils.
Then you can make the book cover yourself. You need a piece that is a few millimeters larger than the opened book. Then you need another piece from which you can make the two pockets for the book cover. Halve this piece. Now take the large piece of felt and sew the owl onto the front. Turn it over and then sew the small parts to make the pockets. You're done!
Tipp:The rough seam gives the design a special charm. However, if you don't want to sew the envelope, simply use glue wherever the seam would normally be.
