Crafting with gold foil – DIY ideas for beautiful decoration and chic jewelry

Do you like how the gold sparkles and shines? You can use gold foil to create everything from individual pieces of furniture, to decorative and gift items, to handmade gifts and give them a particularly sophisticated touch. The wafer-thin gold foil is easy to handle with a little practice and can be incorporated into numerous DIY projects. Crafting with gold foil is the focus of today's article. In our picture gallery you will find inspiring craft ideas for your home, fashion or jewelry.

Using the gold foil for various DIY projects

When working with the thin, light sheets of gold foil, a certain amount of tact and gentle touch are required, especially when handling small snippets. The glittery gold foil must be placed on a surface coated with glue or transfer adhesive in order for it to stick. Whether you want to cover paper, plastic, glass, wood, or cork with gold foil, you must first define the areas you want to decorate with tape or painter's tape.

You can then apply the glue with a brush. The glue must first dry before you lay down the individual pieces of foil. Drying time varies depending on the brand. For optimal results, it is best to follow the instructions on the respective product packaging.

Make a tissue box out of cardboard with gold foil

Our first DIY project is a great example of how the simplest household items can be jazzed up with a few sheets of gold foil. Would you like to add a decorative touch to the tissue boxes that are often seen around the home? Then decorate a matching cardboard box with gold foil. The cardboard box should be large enough so that you can easily put it over the tissue box.

Apply the glue to the top half of all four sides of the box and allow it to dry. Once it is slightly sticky, carefully place the gold foil pieces on top. Smooth out the foil and use a clean brush to remove the excess gold and save the leftovers for your next project. Finally, you have to cut craft paper in a color of your choice and stick it on the bottom half of the box.

Make your own magnets with a chic design

Do you want to add some sparkle and chic to your kitchen? With these elegant black and gold magnets you can decorate your fridge with gold accents and make it seem less boring. The materials required are: air-drying modeling clay, small magnets, black acrylic paint, gold foil, glue, circle cutter, brush and spray paint. Roll out the modeling clay and cut out circles. You are welcome to use the cookie cutter to pre-mark what the decoration should look like. Allow clay to harden. In the next step, apply the paint and let it dry. Cover the remaining part with glue and then place the gold foil on top. Seal itthe original magnetswith the spray paint and attach the small magnets to the back with glue.

Make stylish cup coasters out of cast resin and gold foil

If you would like to transfer some of the elegant glow of gold to the table, you can make these unique cup coasters with gold foil. To do this, you have to pour the casting resin into a small plastic bowl and add the gold foil pieces into it. The more foil you add, the intensely golden your coaster will look. Now fill a small bowl with warm water and place the container with the resin in it.

Leave the bowl there for 5 minutes. The heat will help push the large air bubbles to the surface. Now you need a suitable silicone mold that you place on a flat surface. Then pour the resin into the mold and let it dry for 24 hours. If desired, you can color the bottom of the coaster with craft paint. If youwork with casting resin, it is recommended to wear rubber gloves.

If you would like to create certain shapes from the gold foil, such as triangles or squares, other geometric figures or stripes, then you can work with stencils or outline the desired shape with painter's tape and in this way apply the gold more precisely.

Fabric bag with modern, gold accents

With gold foil you can not only beautify your home and create unique decorative items, but also create great fashionable accessories. This is how you can transform a fabric shopping bag into a real eye-catcher. In order for the film to stick to the fabric, you must use an iron and a special textile adhesive.

Squirt some of the textile glue onto a paper plate. If you want to decorate your bag with beautiful golden brush strokes, dip the brush into the glue and apply a layer of glue to the bag in a sweeping motion. At the beginning you will apply more glue and at the end of the stroke you will lift the brush from the fabric to create this great pattern.

Now let the adhesive dry slightly and place the gold foil on top. Gently smooth the foil with your fingers so that you can see the brush stroke underneath. Place a piece of parchment paper on the gold foil and iron on medium heat for about 20 seconds. To achieve a perfect result, ensure that the entire surface of the pattern is heated.

Then let the foil cool and carefully remove. The golden lines can already be seen on the fabric. Repeat this process until you are happy with the design. Before using the bag, allow the film to cure for 72 hours.

You can also use the same technique to dress up items of clothing. Think about different patterns and create stencils if necessary. Letters, fonts and various other figures made of gold foil can be quickly attached. You can be sure that the designs you create will be unique.

You can also give your white fabric sneakers a golden makeover. Follow the steps described above and work carefully with the iron.

Make unique pieces of jewelry with gold foil

The golden foil can be used to create beautiful and unique jewelry. These elegant earrings in the shape of ginkgo leaves are made from shrink wrap and thendecorated with gold foil. Get shrink film in either black, white or transparent and paint the desired motif on its rough side with a permanent marker.

Then cut out the shapes. Place the shape on a sheet of baking paper with the motif facing up and bake in the oven at a low temperature for a few minutes (it is best to follow the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging). Let the homemade piece of jewelry cool down. Smooth any edges with a file and add the finishing touches to the earrings using the gold foil.
