Skull make-up: Where does “sugar skull” make-up actually come from?
skulls andlittle girlsdon't match? Actually, if you choose the sweet and charming alternative “Sugar Skull”. Inspired by the Mexican festival “Dia de Muertos”, or “Day of the Dead” in German, the make-up is presented in cheerful colors and is by no means scary. Every year between October 31st and November 2nd, skeletons wander the streets of Mexico. What looks frightening at first turns out to be a celebration of love upon closer inspection. Mexicans believe that on this day the dead can return to their families and loved ones to celebrate their lives together again.
The Sugar Skull was inspired by Mexican artist José Posada and his painting “La Catrina”. With his caricature, Posada wanted to make fun of the nobility and the wealthy in his home country. After the revolution, Catrina became one of Mexico's most popular symbols. She lets herself ontheir clothingeasy to recognize. The skeleton is wearing his nicest clothes, has makeup on and has his hair styled in an updo.
That's why every year the women and girls in Mexico make themselves up like skulls and then decorate their faces with flowers, stars and hearts. The Mexicans believe that the yellow flowers show the dead the way to this world. The hearts represent themLove of familyand the stars symbolize the hope that everyone will meet again next year. The beautiful festival ends at sunset on October 1st, when Mexicans go to the cemeteries. There they sing songs, tell funny stories and remember deceased relatives, friends and family members.

2. Using the wet make-up in blue and a fine brush, draw two circles around the eyes and then color them in.
3. Paint a heart in pink andmake up your lipswith the pink lipstick.
