From classic farm animals to exotic jungle creatures, it's amazing what kinds of animals you can create with pom poms. As symbols of spring, bunnies, sheep and chicks are a lovely addition to any Easter basket. Whether as a festive decoration in your own four walls or as small Easter gifts and souvenirs for friends and family, wool pompom animals are a real eye-catcher. They would also look adorable on a shelf or dresser in a child's room all year round. The following instructions show how children can make pompom animals out of wool for Easter.
Make cute Easter animals out of wool
Materials and tools required:
– Cardboard 20 x 20 cm
– Round lids, jars or coins (from 2 to 7 cm in diameter)
– Pin
– Sharp scissors
– Yarn in different colors, approx. 5 meters of each color
– Felt in different colors
– Hot glue gun and glue sticks
A notice:Use white yarn for the sheep and yellow for the chick. For the bunnyyou can use yarn in white, brown or gray.
Make pompoms with cardboard
For theMaking the pompomsYou need two disks of the same size, which will later be placed on top of each other. Use two different sized discs - one about 7cm and the other about 5cm in diameter. The outer diameter of the cardboard discs corresponds to the size of the future pom-pom.
Draw two circles of each size by tracing around the lids with a pen. Place a smaller bottle cap and a coin in each of these circles and draw around them.
Cut out all four circles from the cardboard. Cut a hole in the middle of the two circles. Then cut out a small piece to make a C shape. In the end you should have two identical cardboard rings. Repeat this step for the two smaller slices.
Put theboth cardboard ringseach other. Cut a piece of yarn about 15 cm long and wrap the cardboard ring evenly with wool. Feel free to distribute several rounds of wool. The smaller the opening in the middle, the fluffier the pompom will be.
Hold the end of the wool with one hand to prevent the yarn from unraveling. Now cut the wool at the edge between the two cardboard rings. Finally, tie a piece of wool between the two rings around the pompom and knot the ends tightly.
Pull out the cardboard rings. Now you can style the pompom a little and cut off any long or shaggy pieces so that it becomes nice and evenly round.
Repeat the steps above to make more pom poms in different colors. You will need a total of six pompoms – three large and three small.
There are also other ways to make pompoms. The most famous are:
- with a fork - this creates very small pompoms
- with your fingers
- with a plastic pompom maker - there are stencils in different sizes
Cut out eyes, ears and noses
You can make the pompom animals' facial features as big or small as you like. The eyes and noses in this project are approximately 0.5 centimeters in diameter. The rabbit ears are approximately 2.5 cm long and the sheep ears are approximately 1.5 cm long.
What you need:
Eyes:Cut out six small circles from black felt.
Nose:Cut out two small circles from pink felt - for the bunny and the sheep. A small triangle made from the orange felt for the chick's beak.
Ears:Two oval shapes made of brown felt and two of white felt for the ears of the rabbit and the sheep.
Place a dab of hot glue in the bottom center of each rabbit and sheep ear and press them together for about 10 seconds. This gives the ears a realistic look.
Assemble the animal figures
Hase:Use hot glue to attach the eyes and nose to the small pompom. Add some hot glue to the end of each ear (the part that is clamped together) and press the ears onto the bunny's head so they are facing up. Once the glue has set, glue the bunny's head to the body (the larger brown pom pom). Allow the hot glue to cool.
Sheep:Cut the smaller white pom pom so that the bottom part is narrower than the top to create a soft V shape. This will give the sheep a narrower chin. Use hot glue to attach the eyes and nose. Attach the ears to the sides of the head with some hot glue so that they hang down slightly. Once the hot glue has set, glue the head onto the larger white pom pom.
Chicken:Glue the eyes, nose and beak on the chick. Attach the chick's head to the larger yellow pom pom with hot glue. And done!
