Christmas nail pictures made easy

Thread art is about nail pictures that you can transform into beautiful works of art from wooden discs, wool and nails. This makes it easy to make Christmas trees, stars or other figures. There are an incredible number of variations that you can try out yourself or with your children if it has to be a children's craft. A little help from dad can't be a bad idea in this case either. For your desired shapes on the tree disc you will need the following materials:

Materials

  • Wool thread or Bakers Twine
  • Tree slice (linden wood is perfect for this)
  • small nails
  • Hammer
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Eye hook and possibly also nail pliers

Instructions for String Art – German nail pictures

  • First draw your desired motif on the tree disc and then hammer the nails into the wood along the contour. You can also easily form a simple five-pointed star or Christmas tree.
  • Tie a piece of thread around one of the nails (this step is best done by an adult). Have your child wrap the thread around their nails. This part is great for developing little ones' fine motor skills.
  • When you or your child is finished, tie another knot around any nail. Then leave a little extra thread, cut it off and tuck the excess under your string art.
  • If you're worried about the knot coming undone, you can dab a little glue to hold the whole thing in place.
  • Finally, you can outline the outside line again with the thread to emphasize the desired shape.
  • First screw a small eye hook onto the top of the tree disc. You can also first lightly hammer to make the hole and then simply screw it by hand.
  • Use nail pliers to screw the eye hook into place if it ends up being a little difficult.
  • Attach a bow or string to the thread picture and hang it on your Christmas tree. You can also attach the art piece to a gift, for example, to give your gift packaging a particularly creative touch.

Decoration made of wooden discs with thread art templates

You can also create a DIY project with string art using printed templates. Such a rustic art piece can surely fit your style when preparing your Christmas decorations. You can also use wooden glass coasters, which are also suitable for string art.

Materials

  • Wooden tree slice or coaster
  • Green or red crochet yarn or thread
  • Nails
  • Hammer, scissors, eye hooks

Instructions

  • Paint or print out the shape you want to create and center it on the piece of wood. Then attach the sheet at the top and bottom corners with nails.
  • Fill in the rest of the tree structure with more nails, spacing them about 1cm apart. If the nails are too close together, it will be more difficult to work with the thread. However, too much distance can loosen the thread during tying.
  • Once you've outlined the entire shape with your nails, you can tear off the paper template.
  • First, start wrapping the cotton thread or crochet thread around a nail at the top or bottom. Continue like this until you have wrapped all the nails with the yarn. You can work in a pattern or randomly by keeping the thread taut during this step.
  • Move the wool from one side to the other, turning over the nails every now and then. Repeat the process until the entire figure is well filled.
  • Finally, when your string art is filled the way you want it, tie another knot around a nearby nail to secure the thread. Cut away the excess pieces.
  • Again, add an eye hook to the top of the ornament and thread it with twine or a hook to hang your Christmas decorations on the Christmas tree.
  • You can create a whole range of figurines and ornaments for decorating gifts or handmade Christmas decorations this way. Of course, you can let your imagination run wild and add various interesting elements, as well as paint the wooden discs with paint.
