Stair carpets don't just have a decorative function. While they can cover unsightly stair coverings, they also improve walking comfort and also dampen the impact noise that quickly arises in empty stair areas and appears unpleasant and unhomely. Now there are different ways you can lay carpet on stairs. And so that you can consider them all and weigh up the advantages and disadvantages, we have put together the various options for stair carpets for you. Together with the design ideas in pictures, you will find it easier to find the perfect carpet for stairs and create a cozy staircase.
Carpeting for stairs
These are steps completely covered with carpet. The actual material of the steps cannot be seen. This makes this variant very practical, especially when it comes to old or unsightly onesCladding for stairsthat you don't want to exchange, but instead want to hide inexpensively. Carpets work particularly well on narrow stairs and stair areas and have other advantages in addition to the visual ones.
Since the carpet is laid continuously, dangerous tripping hazards are avoided. There are no creases or edges that could get caught. The atmosphere is also immediately improved. Since stairwells and areas often appear quite bare and cold, this can be counteracted with a carpet. And since the carpeting also covers the entire steps, the comfort is even greater.
Of course, you can also leave some of the covering on the steps visible on the carpet. You decide for yourself! This was also done in this example. For example, the carpet in this example has been pushed to the right side. The wood can again be seen on the left. The green stair carpet looks particularly good against the dark wood. The color makes the stair area much more upbeat and homely.
Stair runner for a mix of materials
You can also leave the original covering of the steps visible if you like the look of it, as runners usually only cover 80 percent of the steps. This is a particularly good option if you are just looking for a non-slip solution that also looks elegant at the same time. This automatically makes a staircase look more elegant and classic. To ensure that the stair carpet runner does not slip on the steps, stair rods are used to fix it, which can be made of both metal and wood. This also creates a continuous surface that also prevents tripping.
Compared to carpets or stair mats that are glued, the runner has another big advantage. The stair rods can be easily removed so that the runner can be easily cleaned at any time. And since it gets worn out over time or maybe just gets boring, it can be easily replaced.
However, if the carpet rods are too much for you, you don't necessarily have to use them. If you decide on a runner, it can also simply be glued to the steps. However, keep in mind that the runner is difficult to remove later, it has to be cleaned on site and the covering of the steps could be damaged when removed.
With the runner you can wonderfully underline your furnishing style and equip the hallway with great patterns and colors. How about one, for example?colorful kilim carpet, which not only enhances the living spaces, but also the boring stair area? It doesn't always have to be neutral and subtle! The green runner on the dark steps really comes into its own.
And if you don't like it colorful, just use a more neutral pattern and create an eye-catcher, as was done in this example. Even a simple pattern can quickly create an eye-catcher, but it is not as intrusive as a strong color, for example. Just think about what you want from the carpet in terms of appearance.
Lay stair mats instead of the entire stair carpet
Stair tread mats are the third option with which you can create a non-slip and visually attractive surface on the steps. The mats take up the least amount of space on the carpet steps, which often makes them favorites if the stairs are not new and beautiful. In this case, the stair carpet mainly serves useful purposes rather than aesthetic ones.
However, some people don't dare because the strong adhesive used to attach the mats as stair carpets is extremely difficult and sometimes even impossible to remove if you want to get rid of the mats one day. Alternatively, stair mats can be used without gluing. The carpet without glue is gentler on wood.
If the use of carpet in the form of stair mats is already planned when building the stairs, these can also be embedded in the steps themselves. This creates a flat surface and prevents a tripping hazard. The mats can not only have different shapes. There are also variants that only cover the tread surface and those that enclose the step. You have to decide for yourself which one appeals to you more.
