When it comes to easy-care, long-term bloomers for the sunny container garden, geraniums are the absolute favorite. But which flowers, foliage plants and grasses go well with the flowering pelargoniums? We list several geranium planting partners.
Geraniums for the sunny south-facing balcony
Pelargoniums (also known as geraniums) are easy-care subshrubs that bloom all summer long. You can find a wide selection of varieties and colors in garden centers. However, they all have one thing in common: They are true sun worshipers and thrive best in sunny to shady locations. Some varieties also feel comfortable in partial shade, although flower production slows down over time. A place protected from rain and wind is therefore ideal. Thesun-loving pelargoniumsCan handle ordinary potting soil as long as it is really nutrient-rich.
Geraniums come from the southern parts of Africa, but are also widespread in New Zealand and Australia. They were also brought to Europe at the end of the last century. Nowadays, they have crept into the hearts of Europeans so much that Switzerland even chose the flower as its national plant.
When choosing planting partners, you should choose flowers, foliage plants and perennials that have similar soil and location requirements. Typical planting partners are lavender, magic bells, numerous herbs and daisies. But there are of course other planting combinations - for example with ornamental foliage plants or ornamental grasses. We list several such combinations that not only look good but are also easy to maintain.
Pelargonium plant partner: Purple and pink spring flowers for the sunny balcony
The first arrangement combines foliage plants with summer flowers. A sunny to shady location proves to be optimal.
- A. Geranien “Moonlight Pink” – 2 St.
- B. Zierspargel “Sprengeri” – 1 St.
- C. Magic bells – 2 pcs.
- D. Ananassalbei “Golden Delicious” - 3 St.
Pineapple sage is a wonderful fragrant plant with attractive heart-shaped grass-green leaves and red flowers. The plant provides food for pollinating insects such as butterflies, bees and bumblebees from July to November. The subshrub grows to a maximum height of 80 cm in the pot.
Geranium plant partner: A charming duo with flowers for the sunny south-facing balcony and terrace
The next arrangement is super simple. Morning glories of the Evolvulus family, variety “Blue Daze”, let the red geraniums play the main role. The plant has slightly overhanging shoots and is therefore perfect for planting in pots or balcony boxes.
- Geranien “Red Elite” – 1 St.
- Morning glories “Blue Daze” – 5 pcs.
Decorative foliage plants and flowering perennials with white flowers for the south-facing balcony
A wonderful ensemble for the south-facing balcony in white and green: the white flowers of the plargoniums and snowflake flowers are clearly visible even in little sunlight, for example at sunset. The spider plants and large evergreens form the background for the flowering perennials.

- B. Spider plant – 1 piece
- C. Large Periwinkle – 1 pc.
- D. Snowflake flower (variety “Abunda Giant White”) – 3 pcs.
