Fire pits are a popular addition to the garden. Friends and family gather around this burning heart and enjoywarmth of the fire. OneFire pit in the gardenCan be dug into the ground or standing on the ground. You can choose the shape, design and material individually. Traditionally, open fire pits in the garden are round, but they look equally good in rectangular, square and triangular shapes. Take a look at these beautiful ideas in our image gallery and get inspiration for your own project.
Fire pit in the garden – where to build?
When building a fire pit in the garden, you must plan a certain distance from flammable objects. Never build them directly under a tree. The sparks and flames can set a dry tree on fire. You will also need to mark the electrical and gas lines, including telephone and cables, so that you avoid them during construction. The pit should be at least 3 to 6 meters away from the outside walls of a house, garden shed or fence.
Fire pit in the garden – The construction
The fire should ideally be placed above or below ground level. In the first case, the fireplace is embedded in the ground, while in the second, a suitable surround is built. The distance between the top of the surrounding wall and the pit must be at least 30 centimeters. Use heat-resistant materials such as natural stone or concrete. Conventional bricks can dry out and crack when exposed to excessive heat.
Security measures
Fire is dangerous, so you also have to think about fire safety. Build the fire pit in the garden near a water source. For example, a water hose that is 6 to 15 meters away from the house. Also consider keeping a handheld fire extinguisher handy while the fire is burning. A wide aluminum shovel is also a good tool for putting out fires quickly. Never leave the fire unattended and supervise any children playing near the fire. At the end of the evening, you can quickly put out the fire using a bucket filled with sand.
Red painted concrete wall and red fireproof glass in the fireplace
If you choose a specific accent color for the garden fire pit, we recommend repeating this in other elements of the seating area design. This can be textiles or, as here, the concrete retaining wall, which was designed in the same red color as the garden fireplace. With a minimalist design in neutral colors, a few color accents are always well received.
How to build a barbecue pit in the garden
Even beginners can try out a barbecue area in the garden. You will need gravel and granite stones (or fireproof fireplace stones). Use a shovel to shape the desired shape into the lawn. Dig up only a thin layer. Fill this with gravel. Next the stones are laid. These do not start directly at the edge of the gravel area, but a little further inside. That's it, you're done. If you don't feel confident about the construction, it's best to hire a bricklayer and be sure to ask the office whether a permit is necessary.
Led strips on bench and fire pit edges
Admittedly, the fire pit in the garden is an eye-catcher in itself. But you can make it even more interesting in the evenings by adding indirect lighting. You attach these below the top plate. Repeat the whole thing on the sofa to enhance the effect. The idea is particularly suitable for modern outdoor areas.
fire and water
A wonderful combination for outdoors is fire and water. So if you have a pool, fountain or pond, set up a seating area with a gas fire pit nearby! In the evening, pretty reflections appear in the water and the romantic atmosphere is even enhanced. You can also create multiple seating areas this way.
Fire pit in the garden with U-shaped seating
A great idea for a property on a slope is to integrate the seating area into this slope. You get a sunken seating area from which you can have a great view of the garden. A U-shaped sofa, raised beds for the corners and a flickering fire in the middle create the perfect relaxation area. Garden lighting improves the mood even further.
You can of course play with the shape and size of the fire pit in the garden. If you have enough space, build a large model. But with a small plot of land it makes a small one. Round designs appear traditional. With a rectangular and square variant you can create a modern design. The metal surface of this model is combined with equally metal armchairs.
Concrete fire pit on patio
Of course, the choice of material or cladding also plays a role in the style of the end result. The simple concrete look chosen for the terrace above has a very minimalist look, while facing stone cladding can create a rustic or Mediterranean style, but can also be modern depending on the stone design.
Storage space for glasses and decorations
You can also build the patio fire pit under a roof or pergola. But then make sure that it is high enough so that the smoke from the fire doesn't make black spots. Of course, there is no such risk with an electric model. You can also combine the charm of the fire with some lanterns and candles.
indirect lighting with LEDs
A simple, modern outdoor area like this looks much cozier and more natural with a fire. Here too you see an interesting variant of combining fire and water. This time a water wall was chosen. The built-in bench is equipped with a planted raised bed to bring nature onto the terrace.
Waterfall system and stone fireplace
Or how about a splashing waterfall? All of these elements are suitable for any garden style. The terrace above, for example, has a Mediterranean design and looks very romantic. The style can be combined with wooden, wicker or metal furniture. The lighting is created with the help of LEDs in the waterfall and recessed lights in the wall, as well as a lantern.
