The lucky feather is one of the most popular green plants. Zamioculcas are undemanding and forgive almost all care mistakes. Even complete beginners don't need to worry about care. Even more so - everyone can divide and propagate Zamioculcas and thus receive young plants to give away. With a little patience and our simple gardening tips, you can choose succulents over leaf cuttings.
Propagating Zamioculcas: From leaf cuttings to young lucky feathers
Have you been a friend's guest and seen a big, beautiful lucky feather? Then you can simply ask to pluck a leaf and then plant it at home. Propagation via cuttings is extremely easy and takes place in four simple steps:
- First, look at the plant and check for signs of disease. Yellow, withered leaves,Mold in the earthand small midges flying around the pot indicate rot and infestation. If the plant looks healthy, pluck a large leaf along its stem from the center of the plant. There are usually new leaves at the top, but at the bottom they are already old.
- First place expanded clay granules on the bottom of a small cultivation pot to allow the excess water to drain away easily. Good drainage is very important for young plants. Then fill the small growing pot with conventional potting soil.
- Insert the cutting approx. 2 cm deep into the substrate. Proper care is very important in the coming months: place the pot in a sunny location, not directly over a heater. A heated room with an east or west orientation proves to be optimal. Water the plant as needed after first finger testing. Insert your index finger into the substrate about 2 cm deep. It should feel moderately moist. Never let the potting soil dry out completely, but also avoid waterlogging. The young plant does not need any fertilizer in the first few months. Only after it has formed more leaves can you fertilize it.
- Patience is now required because the cutting takes around four to five months until it develops its roots. Only after this period do new leaves appear.
Share the lucky feather and quickly get two new green plants
If you want to get two new plants quickly, you can also divide the lucky feather. A good time for this is spring, when the plant will be repotted anyway. But if you missed the moment, you can share them during the winter rest period. This will give the Zamioculcas enough time to recover. The division is also super easy.
Sharing the lucky feather when repotting: instructions
- First, dig a small hole around the plant. Hold them with one hand at the bottom of the stem and the other at the top of the leaves. Try moving them around the pot.
- Remove the lucky feather from the earth. If there is still substrate stuck to the roots, you can carefully remove it with your hands.
- Check the entire plant for signs of infestation or disease. Also check the roots and cut off any diseased or rotten roots.
- Line a work surface with newspaper and place the plant on it.
- Trim the plants so that each part has at least one stem and several healthy roots.
- Take two pots and fill them with potting soil. You can add sand, which improves the permeability. Do not use nursery pots, they are too small. Instead, choose containers that are large enough for the two new plants.
- Now all that's left is to plant each plant in its pot. Water them thoroughly for the first two to three weeks. However, if you notice root rot when dividing, you should water the plants less than usual for the first week.
