Gastrointestinal inflammation, also known as stomach flu, is a relatively common illness. It is divided into different types, which depend on which pathogen caused it. Find out what these are here.
1. Viral gastrointestinal infections
In such species, viruses are the trigger. Most often this is the rotavirus or the norovirus.
2. Bacterial gastrointestinal infections
In this case, as the name suggests, bacteria are the cause of the disease. Such bacteria include Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus, Proteus, Salmonella and Shigella.
3. Parasitic gastrointestinal infections
Parasites can also cause gastrointestinal inflammation. These usually enter the organism through the ingestion of food containing the parasites. Parasites that can cause infection of this species are Entamoeba hystolitica and Giardia lamblia.
4. Eosinophilic gastrointestinal infections
The true trigger for this is currently unknown. However, it was found that there is a connection between the disease and food allergies. The rare gastrointestinal flu can occur in both children and adults.
