What is a pomegranate?

The shrub-like fruit plant known as pomegranate is native to northern India and Iran. As cultivation spread from the Mediterranean to all parts of the world, it spread rapidly. The name pomegranate comes from the Latin words pōmum, meaning “apple,” and grānātum, meaning “seed.”

In addition to its distinctive bulbous shape and thick skin that glows in various shades of red and maroon, this fruit is famous for the endless supply of delicious, crunchy red seeds it contains. Pomegranates can be consumed in a variety of ways.

Benefits of Pomegranates

New studies suggest that pomegranates (and pomegranate extracts) may have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, which is good news for our health. Although pomegranates and pomegranate juice are rich in antioxidants, more research is needed to determine the exact effects of these compounds on the body and other possible health benefits.

Correctly de-seed the pomegranate

Preparing the fruit for juicing begins with removing the seeds from the pomegranate.

Remove the seeds with a spoon

The procedure goes like this:

  1. Halve a pomegranate lengthwise.
  2. Gently scrape off the white skin.
  3. When you hold a pomegranate half upside down over a large bowl and tap it with a spoon, the seeds will loosen and fall into the bowl.

You can also use your fingers to loosen the tough cores, but be careful not to touch them too much or they may burst.

Use water and bowl

  1. Locate the flowering opening on the top of the pomegranate.
  2. Use a knife to cut out a square all around. Take off the lid. Alternatively, you can cut the fruit in half.
  3. Take a bowl of water and separate the kernels from the membrane and skim them in the water.
  4. To remove the skin or membranes floating on top of the water, you can use a strainer with a spoon or simply your hands. Dip your hands into the bowl of seeds and gently massage the seeds between your palms to loosen the skin. This removes extra membranes attached to the seeds. Take out any pieces that are hanging down.

Try these techniques!

Use a food processor

  1. Pour the seeds into a blender. Puree the seeds until completely broken down, but leave most of the seeds whole. This usually takes no longer than fifteen to twenty seconds.
  2. Use a strainer to drain the juice. Due to the dense pulp, the juice only flows through the sieve at a snail's pace. Press the pulp against the sieve with a rubber spatula to speed up the process. The liquid should then drain more quickly.
  3. To serve, pour the juice into a glass. You should be able to get about 4 glasses of juice from 5 to 6 large pomegranates.

Quick and easy alternative without a device

  1. In case you need to juice a pomegranate and don't have a blender or juicer available, a zip-top bag will do. For example, you can use a freezer bag.
  2. After removing the seeds from the fruit, put everything in the bag, seal it and start squeezing. Use either your hands or a rolling pin to flatten the bag. To avoid damaging the bag, roll it carefully.
  3. One option is to pour the juice through a sieve into a bowl, which removes the pulp and seeds. Another option is to cut off a small corner of the bag and drain the juice into a bowl. Make sure that the incision is not too wide so that the seeds cannot escape.
