Electricity, running water, a warm heater – all things that we take for granted. So obvious that we probably don't even know exactly which everyday devices and activities actually require natural gas. What uses gas in the home?
- Hot water
- Cook
- Strom
- Heating
- Grill
- Tumble dryer
While a gas grill or tumble dryer are rather rare in Germany, these are the other four points for which we need natural gas every day. And these are also the things where we can save wonderful gas. How exactly can you?Save gas in the home?
Saving gas in the household: This is what you can do
Save water
- Bathing uses an unnecessary amount of water
Of course, we don't mean that you should wash yourself less often. However, you can reduce your gas consumption with simple tricks and a change in your habits. How exactly? “Shower” is the magic word. Yes, you know thatuses less waterthan the even more beneficial bathing. But of course this also means that you save gas for hot water.
- Use an economical shower head
And if you're already saving gas in the household by showering as a more economical alternative to bathing, why not use a more economical shower head? You can reduce water consumption by a whopping 50 percent with an energy-saving shower head and it is not an expensive investment either. However, you should still seek advice from retailers to find the best model for you.
- Don't leave the water running all the time
Observe yourself in everyday life. How often do you leave the water running unnecessarily – when washing dishes, brushing your teeth or even while soaping your hands (following the 30-second rule)? You should be aware that in the long run this will result in shocking amounts of (warm) water that are simply unnecessary.
- Use cold water whenever possible
Not every time you need water, you automatically need warm water. So you can save gas in the household by alsouse the cold one. In addition, it is also a waste to leave the water running until the hot water finally comes. Instead:
- You can also take a less hot shower. It's much healthier anyway. Cold showers in particular are good for the body, but of course we understand if that's a little too radical for you. Ultimately, even the smallest change counts.
- You can also shave with cold water. You just rinse the razor. Then why do you need warm water? Once you wash your face, you can also use warmer water (although a cold facial shower is much more beneficial).
- Don't leave the water running while brushing your teeth, especially not warm.
- You don't need to rinse dirty dishes in warm water before putting them in the dishwasher. If so, you may want to rinse off any coarse items briefly with cold water. The dishwasher does the rest all by itself.
Avoid gas emergencies by saving electricity
Many people are not aware that natural gas is also used to produce electricity (currently 15 percent of natural gas). Accordingly, you can protect Germany's gas reserves by also protecting yoursReduce power consumption. So if you thought you could now use an electric boiler to produce hot water without gas, you are wrong. Also look at which devices consume electricity when not in use (keyword “standby mode”). So you can save gas in your home by doing the following:
- When cooking, only heat up as much water as you actually need. Use a lid (regardless of whether it is a kettle, pot, pan or other cookware). Steamers prove to be particularly economical.
- Avoid preheating in the oven, as this wastes a lot of unnecessary energy. By using circulating air instead of top and bottom heat, you can save yourself the trouble of preheating.
- Avoid standby mode. For this purpose, you can easily use a multiple socket with which, thanks to the switch, you can conveniently turn off all household appliances that you do not need overnight or while you are at work at once.
- If possible, replace old household appliances that are not yet very economical with more modern models. Of course, we're not asking you to replace your refrigerator, television, washing machine, etc. overnight, but if you've already been thinking about replacing certain appliances, now is a good time. Also consider whether the large freezer in the pantry is actually absolutely necessary, or whether the small one in the refrigerator is not enough.
Save gas when heating your home
Now in the summer, the difference in gas prices may not have been quite as noticeable. But at the latest when againTime to heat upis, the great horror can come. Therefore, prepare yourself in advance. Reduce gas prices and consumption by fixing weak points in your home. These include leaks in windows and doors, for example. Condense these in good time!
Air in radiators also increases consumption. Before you turn on your heating for the first time, the radiators should be vented if necessary. This means that the warm water can flow easily and give off heat evenly. You should also not disturb the heat flow - do not place any furniture in front of the radiator and dust it. It is best to close weak points such as the windows with blinds or curtains and to ventilate the room several times a day using shock ventilation instead of constantly opening the window.
Fan heaters and radiant heaters are not efficient heat sources and are not suitable as an alternative to central heating. They only serve as a transition until, for example, a very cold room has warmed up enough due to the actual heating or if the heating fails for a short time. Otherwise it's yoursPower consumption far too high.
