Mixing old and new when furnishing

This home is a perfect mix of old and new. The project was realized by Archiplan Studio in 2012 and the building is located in Mantua, Italy. However, it dates back to the 15th century and can be described as a real monument. For this reason, the homeowners wanted to retain, restore or slightly improve as many authentic details as possible from the original interior during the renovation. The ceiling in all rooms is the original one from back then. Other accents, such as wooden beams and brick and clinker walls, are only treated superficially using modern materials so that they last longer and are not damaged over time when people actually live in the living spaces. In the project it is simply wonderful to see how the modern furnishings and the older details of the period construction gently merge into one another and create a harmonious living ambience.

Mix old and new when setting up

The kitchen is partly open plan, so there is no door, but is in a separate room next to the living room. It is decorated in bright, pleasant tones, like the entire apartment itself. From the floor to the walls to the ceiling, everything is designed in cream-white. The same parquet floor is laid in all rooms except the bathroom. The parquet wood is coarsely sanded and laid in a herringbone pattern. Very similar nuances are selected for the furnitureAccents in contrasting colorsor made of contrasting materials. In the kitchen this is the kitchen island made of marble, the built-in kitchen appliances made of brushed stainless steel and the kitchen fronts in a light, high gloss.

The living room is spacious and minimalist in design. When less is more, only a few pieces of furniture are really needed. Two sofas with a glass coffee table, wing chair with side table, fireplace integrated into the wall, a television table with TV and no trace of home accessories in over 40 square meters of living space. But the room doesn't seem bare or impersonal at all. Accents are the several frescoes on the walls, which are reminiscent of traditional wall paintings from the past. In addition, the viewer's eye is drawn to the purple velvet upholstery of the sofa and armchair.

After the last onesTrends in furnishingsThe bedroom has a separate bathroom integrated into the room. It is only separated from the sleeping area by an airy partition made of wooden slats and is located right behind the bed. The authentic wooden ceiling with hand-made carvings and floral ornaments makes a great impression. In this room, more emphasis is placed on the overall effect than on the furnishings - simple, functional furniture and straightforward design.

There is another room, smaller than the remaining two, but brighter and more spacious. It serves as a study but can be converted into a children's room. The old wooden ceiling is painted white, as are the walls. A design accent is placed here on a small spot on the wall. As if cut off, a small area of the original brick wall is left visible in the corner.
