Architecture studio Stadt Architecture recently renovated an apartment in New York for a Canadian couple. At first glance, you notice the elegant gold color used to paint the ceiling of the bedroom. The gold from the ceiling then drips down the green wall and conjures up a unique mural that is undoubtedly a unique highlight in the room.
The 51 square meter apartment is located in the Chelsea district. The name of the project is called Chelsea Pied-à-Terre. Pied-à-terre means “foot on the ground”. The customer chose this French expression that describes a small town distant from the owner's permanent residence. Located on the west side of Manhattan, Chelsea is considered a historic district that has enjoyed great popularity in recent years.
Vancouver's Stanley Park served as inspiration for the gold color on the green accent wall. The architects used a photo of Vancouver's Stanley Park, which features a golden sun over the evergreen landscape, as an idea for the wall covering. Theattractive accent wallwith large drops of gold is a hand painted painting by Calico Wallpaper. The artwork was intended to replace the concrete landscape of downtown Manhattan with a lush natural landscape from southwest Canada. This attractive wall design gives the impression that a green wall has been built into the room.
The gold ceiling looks like it flows down to the bed and through itthe charm of a four-poster bedcreates. The architecture studio chooses the “Great Bed of Ware” by Hans Vredeman de Vries as an important reference point for the ceiling and wall design. It is a 16th-century ornamental wooden bed that is in the collection of London's Victoria and Albert Museum. The designers see the gold-green unique wall paneling as an analogue to the upholstery and hand-carved decorations that adorn the canopy and headboard of this bed. The gold color used to paint the ceiling represents the canopy, while the green area represents the headboard. The earthy tones of the mural are complemented by the dark wooden frame of the bed and the gold sconces on either side of the bed. The other walls in the room are painted white.
The fascinating wall art is not only the highlight in the bedroom, but also acts as the heart of the rest of the apartment. The bedroom is separated from the adjacent living room by etched glass doors. If you leave it open, you can also admire the gold-green wall from the living area. Even when closed, the decorative glass allows plenty of light to penetrate the room.
The light oak herringbone flooring flows from the bedroom into the living room. The walls in the living room are white. The color palette used for the large mural is reflected in the furniture. The dark green velvet sofa, the green glass table, the armchair made of wood and leather, as well as the round carpet with splashes of gold create a harmonious and well-thought-out overall picture. The connection to nature is reinforced by six photographs on the wall behind the sofa, which depict beautiful landscapes.
In front of the main entrance in the corner of the lounge there is a round dining table with two chairs. The kitchen is opposite the front door. As part of the apartment renovation, the kitchen was redesigned to make the most of the natural light from the windows in the living room. Predominantly white surfaces decorate the kitchen, including the cabinetry, marble countertops and terrazzo floors. The wooden shelves and metal fittings built into the cabinets provide a darker contrast.
A similar style and color scheme characterizes the bathroom, which is located next to the bedroom. Clear lines, bright surfaces and high-quality terrazzo flooring in neutral colors combine to create an elegant and stylish ambience.
