A 33 square meter apartment that functions as functionally as a room twice as large? Although it is difficult to imagine, it is possible, as you will see for yourself with the example of a beautiful apartment in New York. Graham Hill, a true advocate of sustainability and founder of the website Tree Hugger, demonstrates in his own micro apartment how a small apartment can accommodate multiple people using movable, foldable and expandable furniture.
The micro apartment, called “LifeEdited2”, has two rooms withadaptable furnitureequipped and can be reorganized for different functions. There is space for eating, sleeping, working and lounging in a small area.
In the first room, white modular blocks can be arranged in an L shape. They offer comfortable seating in front of the television. You are also welcome to ask for thatTable positioned aroundwhere they serve as benches. The small wooden Passo table from Resource Furniture features expandable surfaces and lowerable legs. Its height and size can be adjusted so that it can be converted into a dining table for 10 people.
This living space can also be transformed into a master bedroom in just a few simple steps. A section of the white built-in cupboard that runs along one of the walls in the room can be folded down to provide a large bed. The cupboard doors on both sides of the bed can also be folded down and transformed into practical bedside tables made of dark wood.
The other room in this micro apartment can also perform such flexible functions. A long desk can be folded away from the wall herea functional home officeto accomplish. The workstation can be converted into a drinks bar counter with storage above.
Although the micro apartment “LifeEdited2” was originally intended as a sleeping space with one bed, the white blocks can be positioned from the living room into the next room, where they then offer another sleeping option for guests. A curved accordion partition from Hufcor can be installed between the two rooms, ensuring privacy for both rooms as required.
Graham Hill chose a simple color palette for the functional micro apartment. White painted walls, light oak parquet with a herringbone pattern and modern brass lights create a harmonious overall picture. Gray felt panels decorate the wall in the first room. They absorb sound and ensure better acoustics in the room.
In the separate kitchen, the recycled gray stone forms a back wall that contrasts with the white kitchen cabinets and makes a great combination. The marble-like material is a new creation called Lithoverde. The material consists of up to 99% waste material from stone production and 1% natural resin, which serves as a binding agent. In the adjacent bathroom, Lithoverde material was also used for the washbasin. Dark gray round tiles cover the walls here and provide a modern touch.
In the micro apartment “LifeEdited2”, the many sustainable furniture, together with the energy-efficient fans and high-quality energy-saving lamps from Plumen, enable the residents to live a happy, intelligent and simplified life in a 33 square meter area.
This apartment was completed in 2016 and is the second project of its kind. LifeEdited1 covers 39 square meters. If an apartment is less than 35 square meters, it is classified as a micro apartment - a housing typology that is becoming increasingly popular in densely populated cities.
The furniture in the two apartments is produced by Resource Furniture. The company specializes in the development of space-saving designs. When it comes to product quality and sustainability, the company has set itself the goal of raising the bar. In partnership with other forward-thinking manufacturers, the company produces multi-purpose furniture made from environmentally friendly materials and processes and designed to last.
LE2 is the sequel to its predecessor LE1. With this new residential unit, architects and designers wanted to add more functionality to the original space without making the apartment look like a white box, but rather have more texture. LE2 is proof of how optimal living conditions can be created in the smallest of spaces through space optimization and competent design advice.
