Thickening hot cherries: With these tips you can do it perfectly

Whether for cherry crumble cake, fresh waffles or as a topping for a...Winter dessert in a glass– hot cherries are super versatile and always something very special. But so that they are not too liquid and taste delicious, we first have to thicken the cherries. And below we have 3 great tips for you on how to do this very easily.

Thicken hot cherries with cornstarch

Probably the most popular way to thicken cherries is with cornstarch. We already know this tip from our grandmas and we succeed perfectly every time. You can use both potato and corn starch for this. First, heat the fruit from the jar with the juice in a large pot over medium heat. In the meantime, stir 1-2 tablespoons of cornstarch with about 50-60 ml of cold water until smooth. Once the cherries begin to cook, gently stir the starch mixture, stirring constantly. Bring everything to the boil again briefly and remove the pot from the heat. If the mixture is still too liquid for your taste, you can add a little starch and cold water.

Thicken the cherries with pudding powder

Full of flavor, aromatics and just as effective - you can also thicken hot cherries with pudding powder if you prefer. The classic for this is vanilla pudding powder and cherries and vanilla go together perfectly. The method is actually super simple and almost identical to using starch.

  • Drain the cherries from the jar in a colander and collect the juice in a container.
  • Mix the pudding powder with the cherry juice according to the package instructions.
  • Slowly heat fruit and remaining juice in a large pot over medium heat.
  • Once the fruit begins to cook, stir in the pudding mixture.
  • Bring the mixture to the boil again while stirring constantly and remove the pot from the heat.

Can you thicken cherries with flour?

You don't have pudding powder or cornstarch at home and are wondering if you could thicken hot cherries with flour? The answer to that is yes - but with a little caution, because if you use too much flour you will end up tasting it. It is best to use light wheat flour for this.

  • Bring the cherries and their juice to the boil in a large pot.
  • Sieve through a sieve and collect the juice. Add cherry juice to the pot again.
  • Mix 1-2 tablespoons of wheat flour with twice the amount of cold water until smooth.
  • Add the flour mixture to the cherry juice in the pot and simmer for 1 minute, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the pot from the heat, add the fruit back into the liquid and you're done!
