There is always something new and beautiful that you can create for your home with your own hands. However, it is even more advantageous if it can not only be used for purely decorative purposes, but also for practical purposes. Since we are not professional craftsmen, this should be as easy and smooth as possible. With this in mind, we chose the next project for creative minds – building your own bedside table.
Build your own hanging bedside table – simple instructions with pictures
A bedside table doesn't necessarily have four legs and doesn't have to be on the floor. It could also be attached to the ceilingand hang casually next to the bed. Of course, this is not as resilient as the conventional one, but it can still hold water glass and 3-4Booksendure. Its durability depends on its attachment to the ceiling.
Materials needed
To build a simple wooden bedside table yourself, you will need the following materials and tools:
- a wooden disc of any diameter (a wooden board also works)
- Cordless screwdriver
- Cord or rope
- Hook
- dowel
From a wooden disc – mark 3 holes
There are a few things you should consider when choosing materials:
- Larger plate or wooden disc with a larger diameter provides more storage space
- The cord or rope should be selected accordingly
- the drill should be matched to the diameter of the cord
- The hook and dowels should be suitable for mounting on the ceiling and should be able to hold a minimum weight of around 10-15 without any problems
Drill holes for hanging
First, the board or wooden disc is carefully sanded. If desired, you can oil the surface or treat it with glaze. The wood can also be colored easily. To do this, use water-based paints that are not harmful to your health or the environment. The second step is to drill holes in the plate so that it can be attached later. Use a set square to mark three points with the same distance between them. From a static point of view, the three points ensure stable support, although only two of them are sufficient.
Thread string through the holes
Drill the holes slightly larger than the diameter of the cord itself. You determine the exact length of the cord when you consider how high the bedside table should ultimately hang. The height of the traditional bedside table varies depending on the bed design, but is usually between 40 and 60 cm, depending on whether you prefer it low or slightly higher. Then calculate the length of the cord if you subtract 40, 50 or 60 cm from the room height and triple it. Leave a few extra centimeters for knotting and tying. 6 meters of 1.5-2 cm thick rope should be enough. The cord should bethread smoothly through the holes.A toothpick or other sharp stick will probably help. Tie a knot on the bottom side.
Build your own decorative bedside table and leave it hanging
Now you should attach the hook to the ceiling. Determine exactly the desired position, mark it and use a concrete drill and cordless hammer drill to make the drill hole. Insert the dowel into it and then the hook. The finished bedside table construction can then be attached to the ceiling.
More ideas from tree slice
The same idea for a homemade bedside table can be implemented very creatively in connection with the rest of the interior. For a vintage-style bedroom, it would be appropriate to use a wooden panel with a used look. Paint the wood the same shade as the wooden bed so that the two look good next to each other.
Made of wooden planks hung from the ceiling
For a modern, rather simple bedroom, choose a rectangular wooden board that you have previously painted white or choose a very light material. You can easily find a new use for a used chair plate. You can replace the conventional rope with one made of steel. It is particularly stable and you can find a large selection of it in hardware stores.
Made from zinc tray
If you have some old zinc trays in the attic or come across some at the flea market, don't leave them aside. The silver surface goes wonderfully with the romantic living style and is suitable for a harmonious decoration. Attach the trays with rope or string and hang hooks from the ceiling.
Use metal baskets decoratively
Firewood for the fireplace used to be stored in metal baskets and transported to the room. These are very rare to find today, but once cleaned and sanded if necessary, they regain their appearance. A great idea is to use these baskets in your home as decoration. When attached upside down and hanging, they can be wonderfully placed next to the bed as decorative but also practical tables.
Made of metal basket
Due to its braided structure, the metal basket can be hung without drilling holes in the surface. The cord is knotted securely and placed in the correct position.
