The clown costume is one of the most popular for carnival. No wonder, as the clown's clumsy nature perfectly reflects the carnival atmosphere. The clown hat should not be missing, especially if you are not going to wear a wig. How could you make a hat for the clown as easily as possible?
A classic party hat is sufficient as a basis. You can then design this as you wish using a variety of materials, colors and patterns and make it carnival-worthy. But if you make the clown costume yourself, completely or partially, other materials are also suitable for the hats.
Make a hat for the clown using a free template
In the link below you will find templates for cones in three different sizes that you can print out for free. So you print this out, cut it out to the desired size and transfer the shape to any material.Suitable for the accessoryare:

Now cut out the cone template from the end material, roll it up so that the adhesive tab and the other end of the shape overlap. Apply glue to the tab and glue the cone together. Now you can start designing. Finally, tie a rubber band of the right length so that the clown hat sits on your head without slipping.
Dots and pompoms to create
Pom poms and dots are typical patterns/materials for the clown costume. This makes them perfect for hat design. Once you have finished making your cone, you can glue circles out of paper (e.g. with a punch) or paint them with acrylic paint.
A pompom definitely belongs on the tip of your hat. Then you can color the bottom edge with them or attach them in a line from top to bottom. Hot glue works well.

As already mentioned, you can get really creative. The crazier the hat looks, the better. For example, use pipe cleaners when making crazy hats, bending them chaotically and letting them point in all directions on the hat. If you want it to glitter and sparkle, plastic pearl necklaces are a great idea.

Cool craft ideas for carnival – Paper plate clown hat
Instead of using the template above, you can also make a hat for the clown yourself. Paper plates are ideal for this. If you want to make hats for clowns out of paper plates, you will need:
- Paper plates in any color (white ones can be designed yourself)
- flat paper cup/bowl/plastic bucket/yoghurt cup in matching color
- pom poms
- any other decorations
- Hot glue
How to make the funny hat yourself:
- Take the plate and glue the cup upside down on its center. You will receive the base for the hat.
- If you want, you can also cut a hole in the plate where the cup is located.
- Decorate the clown hat with your chosen decorations.
- Wear the hat like this (it could fit perfectly on children's heads) or tie elastic. You can also stick it on a headband.

Headdress as an alternative to a hat
It doesn't have to be the classic hat. You can also wear it in small format with the help of a headband, for example, or replace it with a different type of headdress.
Unusual colorful headdress with balls
You will definitely attract attention with such a headdress as an alternative to the classic hat. All you need is a headband and colored balls or baubles, ideally in colors that match the rest of the costume. Also make sure that the balls are light so that you can carry the weight later.
Simply glue the balls to the headband in the desired way using hot glue and create any figure you want. But don't necessarily overdo it with the height.

Make little hats with hairbands
Although these are small size hats, that's exactly what makes them so special and eye-catching. In principle, you proceed in exactly the same way as for the larger hats at the beginning of the article: you make the cone and then design it however you like. Once you've finished the design, just glue the mini hat to a headband.
Alternative idea for girls
Rather untypical, but certainly possible for a girl's costume, are flowers to decorate the hat. This makes the accessory upbeat and feminine at the same time. The flowers can be real as wellmade of paperand be self-made. Prepare the hat (it can be either the cone shape or the paper plate version) and decorate with the flowers.
