Whether it's All Saints' Day, Christmas, Easter or a birthday - there are always occasions to beautifully decorate the grave. But it doesn't always have to be something bought. Instead, you can show your creativity by making arrangements and similar grave decorations yourself. Need some guidance?
Arrangements are a frequently chosen grave decoration that can also be varied. This way you can also tie beautiful decorations instead of pinning them. There are simple instructions for both variants that even beginners can follow.
Make your own grave arrangements in birch bark
Bark serves as a “container” and you need moss to hold the flowers in place. But putting it together is really easy, as you will see in the video instructions. If you would like to make unusual grave arrangements yourself, this variant is a really good idea, because at first glance it doesn't look like a classic arrangement at all. Instead of real flowers, you can also use artificial ones so that the decoration lasts a long time or for the winter. But make sure that they don't fly around the cemetery at some point and pollute the environment.
A few tips on how to design your grave sustainablycan be found here.
You need:
- large, curved piece of birch bark
- Moos
- Branches with pussy willows (or any other)
- any seasonal flowers (roses, peonies, chrysanthemums, etc.) or artificial flowers
- Floristry needles
- Floral foam
- Hot glue
How to make the grave decoration yourself for the grave design
- Take the piece of bark and the floral foam. Apply plenty of glue to one side of the floral foam and stick it into the bark.
- Spread moss on top and pin it in place using the needles.
- Place a few flower branches together and insert them into the floral foam on both sides so that they protrude from the bark at the front and back. You can shorten the stems for this purpose if necessary.
- Add a few more, shorter flower heads to thicken the whole thing.
- Now distribute a few branches on the top, which you can also shorten or free from annoying branches if necessary.
- Fill in any gaps with additional flowers, but do not overcrowd the arrangement. It should look relaxed and natural.
With this idea you can also use real and artificial materials or a combination of both. You can adapt the grave decorations for Easter, Dead Sunday or Christmas by incorporating suitable accessories (e.g. suitable colors or decorations such as Easter eggs, Christmas tree baubles, snowflakes, etc.).
You need these materials:
- Fir green
- seasonal flowers or artificial flowers
- other plant elements
- Floral wire and wire pliers
- Decorative ribbons (fabric and mesh)
Instructions for the cross as a grave decoration
- Place two pine branches together to create the long side of the cross. Both branches point in opposite directions. Tie them together tightly with the wire.
- Prepare some shorter pine branches that you can use to compact and thicken the part you just tied. Try not to tighten the wire too much so that the needles and branches can still stick out loosely.
- Now find two well-branched branches and proceed in the same way as before. The important thing is that this element, like a cross, should be shorter than the other.
- Attach it to the vertical element by tying wire in a cross shape around the intersection several times.
- Now decorate the finished cross. Tie bows out of fabric and mesh ribbon and tie them to the decorations.
- Decorate with blooms and fill in gaps with other plants to create a lush arrangement.
Make a cross out of moss
You could also create the second variant with the help of floral foam. To do this, cut the foam a little narrower and put the individual elements together like a cross. Then use floristry needles to attach moss all around and you will get a great base with which you can make your own grave arrangements for All Saints' Day (or other occasions). Then simply add any flowers or other types of plants. For example, you can make a rose arrangement yourself that is also suitable for a funeral.
If you use artificial moss to make this type of funeral arrangement yourself, you can also use hot glue instead of needles. Design the cross according to the season or the occasion, like in the picture for autumn, for example.
