Build your own children's swing for the garden

If you want to give your child great joy over the summer, the best way to do this is probably with a swing. A children's swing for the garden appeals to every child, regardless of age. If you have also decided to expand your garden with a swing, we would like to offer you some instructions that you can implement. For each of these ideas, you will need a tree, a sturdy canopy, or a pergola to hang them. Alternatively, you can also build your own support. We wish you lots of fun and success!

If your child is still very small, you need a garden swing that is safe and in which the baby or toddler is well contained. This fabric seat swing is perfect for this because it has high backrests. And the best thing is that you don't need any special materials or skills to make thembuild.

For this you need the following things:

– Wooden sticks with a diameter of approx. 2.5 cm
– 7.5 Meter Sail
– Steel rings
– Steel carabiner hook
– The sail clamp
– approx. 1 meter of fabric for outside
– Sewing machine, drill, hammer, pliers, saw, column drill

You need to use the stiff you have chosen to make it into a seat. The striped pattern has a practical advantage. You can easily follow them when sewing straight lines. The large piece should be approx. 100 x 35 cm and the two smaller ones 35 x 28 and 15 x 28 cm. Then lay it out in the shape of a cross. This is how the fabric is sewn. Hem the 35 cm sides after folding them over by ironing.

The fabric pieces are now sewn together. To do this, simply follow the instructions above. Before you begin sewing, pin the fabrics together where necessary to secure everything. Then sew the hems and you're almost done with the seat.

Don't forget to sew larger loops. These are added to all outer edges. You will later thread the wooden sticks into these loops. Before you sew the loop completely tight, pin it again with pins and check whether the diameter is correct. Then prepare the rope.

If you don't have cut sticks, you can also cut them yourself from a long stick. For this seat you need four pieces, each 40 cm long. Don't forget to sand the corners and edges so that no one, especially your child, gets injured and drill holes at all ends. Attach the rope to the ring and rope clips as shown.

With the help of a carabiner hook you can now attach the garden swing anywhere. Whether you use a tree branch, the canopy, or a custom-built support, make sure it is sturdy. To make your baby more comfortable, you can also add cushions or a small pillow. But don't be surprised if it suddenly falls asleep.

Skateboard as a swing

You can also use an old skateboard. So if your child has one but no longer uses it or it is simply broken, you can, of course after consultation, get a children's swing for themBuild a garden out of it. And it's actually much easier than you might think.

All you need is a skateboard, some carabiners, a rope that can support your child's weight, two wooden sticks and a drill bit with a suitable diameter for the rope. As soon as you have got everything you need, you can get started. The whole thing won't take much time or effort.

Since the skateboard is no longer intended to be ridden, you can remove the wheels. In principle, your child can help you with this project, but unscrewing it requires strength, so you have to lend a hand. Get a drill ready as well, because you'll need it next.

If your cordless screwdriver isn't too heavy, you can let your child do the drilling (under supervision, of course!). Mark the places with a pencil beforehand so that nothing goes wrong. To do this, also raise the skateboard slightly, as was done here, to avoid accidentally drilling into the ground.

You can also use the holes in the wheels as a guide. The new holes are two in number for each side and should be opposite each other. Now comes the part where you have to thread around with the rope. Get the wooden sticks and carabiners ready right away.

Your children should be able to hold on to the wooden sticks later. Their length should be slightly larger than the width of the skateboard. At both ends, about 2.5 cm from the edge, drill holes for the ropes again. You are welcome to sand the edges smooth again.

Divide the rope into two parts. Thread the two ends of each piece through the holes in the skateboard. Tie them together at the bottom (but not too tightly, in case you need to adjust something later) and repeat this again on the upper side of the skateboard. This way the rope becomes safer and the skateboard cannot slide up.

Then do the same with the handles. You need knots at the top and bottom. And then you can determine the height of the swing and tie it down. The height depends on the age of the child and whether it is used while sitting or standing. Tighten all the knots again and the fun swing is ready.

Classic garden swing

The classic wooden version is just as easy to recreate. A few boards (depending on the desired width) are screwed together, after which you add holes on the sides again. There are also various options for tying the rope. Try for yourself which one you like best.

Finally, we would like to introduce you to another garden swing made of wood, which is also visually very interesting. It's a fun airplane that your kids are sure to fall in love with right away. You can of course paint the wood in any color. The more colorful, the better!

– 1 Brett 5 x 10 x 20 cm
– 1 Brett 2,5 x 20 x 20 cm
– 1 Brett 2,5 x 15 x 25 cm
– Wooden stick with a diameter of 2.5 cm and a length of between 15 and 20 cm
– Anchor screw for the support (beam or tree)
- Rope
– Eyebolt
– The sail clamp
– Sandpaper, varnish and glue

You can see how to assemble the individual aircraft parts from the picture. You can also have the boards cut to size at the hardware store. The roundings are optional. Straight edges are also possible. However, it is important that you sand all edges smooth to avoid splinters and injuries.

Attach the rope for hanging the children's garden swing to the front of both wings using knots again. There is an eyelet on the tail of the aircraft to attach the rope. Don't forget the handles so that your child can hold on tightly while swinging. If you are looking for a children's swing for a small garden, then all three variants are well suited. If it doesn't have a larger tree, you can build an appropriately sized support.
