A staircase is an important part of a home and should be designed to allow quick, easy and safe ascent and descent between floors. When planning, ease of access is the top priority; only then does aesthetics come into play. First, the shape of the stairs is adapted to the room situation and constructed according to the architectural requirements. A particularly popular type of staircase that offers many design options and does not take up much space is the quarter-turn staircase. In our gallery we show you how flexible the 1/4 spiral staircase is in planning. These examples can give you initial ideas for your own dream staircase.
What is behind the term?
Such a variant is angled at 90 degrees. It is a combination of straight and spiral stairs. The twist can be achieved either by an intermediate platform or by decorating the spiral steps. This staircase is still called an “L-shaped staircase” and can be spiraled both at the entrance and at the exit.
Such stairs save more space than straight stairs and offer better space efficiency. The flight of stairs usually runs along a wall, so a railing or fall protection is only required on one side. This type of staircase is therefore often perceived as safer than straight stairs.
The advantages of the quarter-turn staircase
Advantages: 1/4 spiral stairs are very space-saving and visually appealing. They provide a visual barrier between each floor and ensure privacy. You can also store a lot of things in the empty space under the stairs - built-in cupboards, open shelves, a seating area or even a home office.
The disadvantages at a glance
Disadvantages: Quarter-turn stairs are more difficult to calculate and build. What is particularly important is that the rhythm is not disturbed when changing from the straight to the spiral steps. Handrails also require more skill in construction. If there is no intermediate landing or the stair flight width is too small, you may have difficulty carrying large household appliances or bulky furniture between floors.
This type of staircase can be easily adapted to all conceivable room and living concepts and is preferred by many homeowners. Be inspired by the examples in our picture gallery!
