Best Investment: Red Light Therapy Device for Hair Loss
- Art:LED bridge
- Function:3 clinically proven LED wavelengths: blue (415nm), red (633nm) and near infrared (830nm) to reduce the visible signs of aging, redness and hyperpigmentation.
Why we love it:If money is no object, this Dermalux device is, according to the manufacturer, “the world’s most powerful portable LED system for home use.” It is actually intended for the face, but due to its shape and size it can theoretically also be used for the hair and scalp. That may justify the price a little, but it's still a purchase you might want to think about and try out first.
Does LED light therapy work for hair growth?
“LED (light-emitting diode) therapy, particularly in the form of low-level laser therapy (LLLT), has been studied for its potential benefits in promoting hair growth,” begins Dr. Raj Ajora. “This therapy is believed to stimulate hair follicles, increase blood circulation in the scalp, and improve cell metabolism, which may result in improved hair density and thickness.”
She explains that “studies have shown positive results in people with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) and other types of hair loss.”
From a trichologist's perspective, Anabel Kingsley explains that "there is limited evidence on the guaranteed results of using LED, although there is no harm in trying this option" - if you decide to embark on a journey from hair loss to hair growth, you should keep this in mind. Kingsley says that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) devices have significantly more study to back them up, but that each device is best used in conjunction with other hair loss solutions, such as minoxidil, "to achieve maximum benefit."
What type of LED devices are best for the scalp?
“There are a variety of products on the market, from hats to helmets to combs,” says Dr. Raj Ajora, who believes that the best are “ergonomic, easy-to-use devices that can be used consistently in smaller places.”
As you'll see, many brands offer solutions ranging from hats that you wear on your head to small handheld devices that you use to massage your scalp. The latter can help stimulate blood flow to the scalp where hair grows and can sometimes be used alongside scalp scrubs or oils, making them potentially twice as effective. But it's really a matter of preference and budget.
Is red light therapy safe and how often should you use it?
The experts I interviewed agree that high-quality devices (like the ones in this article) are safe, but you must always follow the product's instructions.
When it comes to how often you should use your device, Laurence Newman explains: “Regular use is key, and frequency usually depends on the type of device and treatment goals. Many LED devices, for example, are designed for daily or at least almost daily use of ten to 20 minutes per session, although the exact instructions depend on the specific model.” He adds: “Consistent use is crucial to achieve and maintain the desired effects, whether they are skin improvements or a targeted scalp treatment.”
Ferguson and Measures recommend using their device from The Light Salon “three to five times a week.” They conclude: “With such frequent use, the number of treatments amounts to 240 per year, making an LED an amazing investment.” I agree with this perfect exampleto.
