AML emergency calls already possible in Germany: Faster help thanks to direct location determination

With the new emergency call technology Advanced Mobile Location (AML for short), emergency services can directly determine the location of those seeking help and therefore react more quickly. Because in life-threatening situations, every second counts. When an AML emergency call is made from a smartphone, the location of the caller is immediately sent to the control center. The three-year trial operation for the new emergency call system officially starts across Germany today.

In an emergency, people panic and make stupid mistakes. The last thing you want to do the moment an emergency occurs is to be uncertain. When making an emergency call, many callers often don't know how to give their exact location. The rescue control center repeatedly has to ask at length what affects the “average response time” of the rescue workers in an emergency.

How does the AML emergency call work?

This is faster with the new emergency call technology: If the caller dials the emergency number 112, the cell phone automatically activates WiFi and GPS at the start of the call and transmits the exact location directly to the rescue control center.

AML works even if all available location services were previously turned off. All data will then be automatically sent via SMS. This means that the responsible paramedics and the emergency doctor can have the location data sent directly to their navigation device.

With an AML emergency call, the rescue control center can determine the location of the person seeking help within 20 seconds. Without AML, the process takes about 210 seconds.

Freiburg's control center is bringing the technology forwardDeutschland

The AML system is already used in 13 countries worldwide (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Lithuania, Moldova, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States and Mexico ). In Germany, data protection officers and mobile phone companies have prevented an earlier start.Vodafone, Telefónica Deutschland O2 and Deutsche Telekomhave already announced that their mobile networks now support the AML emergency call system.

Only thatFreiburg rescue control center together with the Berlin fire departmenthave advocated for the new emergency call technology and have declared their willingness to set up the system for the whole of Germany. There are now servers at both locations in which all AML data is stored. To ensure data protection, thesedeleted again after 60 minutes. The AML technology will now be tested for three years and gradually rolled out to the 250 control centers in Germany.

AML almost worksallenSmartphones

In addition to the mobile network and the control center, the end device must of course also support the new standard. AML ison all smartphonesIntegrated with the Google operating system Android from version 4.0, provided that Google Play Services is installed. Apple's iOS devices with version 11.3 also support AML emergency calls. The location transmission isfor all Mobile customers free of charge.

However, the new emergency call technology is not yet perfect

However, AML technology hasstill weaknesses. It fails when we use our own cell phone providerno networkhave. Especially when people in rural areas,in the forest or in remote placesIf you have an accident, this can be a problem. Luckily, this doesn't affect many emergency calls.
