Ground cover plants that bloom in summer – They don’t always have to be the classics!

A wonderfully beautiful carpet of flowers in the middle of your own garden – sounds perfect, right? And after the rather dreary winter and the first wave of flowers in spring, you of course want to keep the colorful colors. You get all of this combined if you choose ground cover plants that bloom in summer. Which ones are worthwhile?

With so many to choose from, choosing is not easy, even if you narrow it down based on location conditions. It doesn't always have to be the classic periwinkle, blue cushion or phlox. Would you like to plant something different this year?

Alpine edelweiss as a special kind of summer bloomer

You get a real gem with the Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum), especially if you're going for white ground cover anyway. You will probably be surprised that this mountain plant also exists for our altitudes. But it is actually possible and what's more, it comes with a robustness that is astonishing. Accordingly, nothing much is necessary for proper care on your part.

The hardy edelweiss needs a sunny location orat least a partial shade, and ideally a sandy soil that is ideally calcareous. This makes it perfect for rock gardens, for example. If everything is right, it will bloom in June and into August with its pretty, white, fluffy flowers. Edelweiss is summer green.

Rather inconspicuous flowers, but in yellow-green and an interesting button shape, form the feather pad (On leptindirty), also called copper knot. However, you can also choose varieties with darker leaf colors ('Platt's Black), so that the ground cover plants also come into their own in this way.

The flowers appear in July and August, and the foliage is evergreen to semi-evergreen and therefore decorates the garden even in winter and can even be used as a lawn replacement. These ground cover plants, which bloom in summer, prefer a sunny to partially shaded location in well-drained soil, where they should also be watered regularly.

As the name suggests, the Blue Bubikopf (Isotoma fluviatilis) in blue, but the color is so delicate that it could give the impression that they are white flowers. Either way, these specimens are a really pretty ground cover that blooms all summer long, from June to October -a real permanent bloomeralso.

The wintergreen plant likes sunshine, but it is also the perfect ground cover for partial shade. It prefers a permeable soil. If the location is also slightly damp, pamper the ground cover especially.

If you would rather have striking and fragrant flowers, the heather carnation (Dianthus deltoides, see cover photo) is just right for you. Although carnations are not uncommon in the garden, they are rarely used as a real ground cover. Not only are the flowers fantastically beautiful, but also the remaining parts of the plant. The clove flowers also exude a pleasant, sweet scent.

The flowering period of heather carnations begins in June and lasts until August. If you have the time to regularly pinch off the spent flower heads, you will also stimulate the formation of new flowersentire summer full of flowers. The robust plant likes it sunny and likes to be pampered with nutrients. And while you're already decorating the outdoor area with this beauty (preferably in different colors), add a few examples to the balcony or terrace too.

The flowering period of this beauty begins in spring. From then on, the impressive pink flowers, somewhat reminiscent of petunias, decorate your garden until August. For this to happen, a sunny to semi-shady location must be ensured, while the flower does not place any special demands on the soil. Pretty easy to care for and undemanding. In addition, the Himalayan gypsophila (Gypsophila cerastioides) is semi-evergreen, which means that it retains at least some of its foliage even in winter, or even all of it if it doesn't get too cold.

Which ground cover blooms all summer? The deciduous herb scores with a really long flowering period, namely from June to October, i.e. throughout the entire summer. The only thing you should ensure for this is a sunny location. Both soil and irrigation can be normal. These easy-care ground covers that bloom in summer are also perfect for gardening beginners.

When you hear ground cover, the first thing that comes to mind is the classic flower varieties. However, ornamental grass, which can perform exactly the same function, is often neglected. There are pretty, small varieties that can also grow wonderfully across the ground and not only impress with beautiful flowers but also with attractive foliage. One of them is definitely the snake beard (Ophiopogon Planiscapus Niger).

Just look at those impressive, almost black blades of grass! The flowers develop in a raceme-shaped, light purple color and appear in July and remain until August. As if that wasn't enough, the grasses are also evergreen and therefore decorate the beds even in winter. The grass thrives in a variety of lighting conditions, giving you not only sunny but alsoshady places in the gardencan plant with him. Normal garden soil is perfectly fine provided it prevailsno waterlogging.

The sun rose is also evergreen and makes your garden appear relatively lively even in winter. It is important that the plant gets a lot of sun, which is why a sunny location is optimal. The soil, on the other hand, is almost always suitable as long as it is permeable and does not allow waterlogging.

Citrus thyme as an alternative to the classic

Thyme is present in many gardens, no wonder with all its benefits. It looks pretty and smells wonderful, is super easy to care for and robust and can also be used for cooking. But if you want to try something different, citrus thyme (Thymus citriodorus) perfectly suited.

The flowers are light purple and decorate the plant in July and August. Its location conditions are the same as thenormal thyme: full sun and well-drained and dry soil. In very cold winter periods, you can provide the plants with winter protection (e.g. brushwood or leaves) as a precaution, as it is only partially hardy. This type of thyme is also edible.
