Flowering shade perennials: These species are ideal for shady areas in the garden

There are shady corners and niches in every garden - so that there are no bare spots, flowering shade perennials are available. We list several species that bloom in spring and summer and grow well under trees, in front of the garden fence or right next to the garden shed.

Shaded areas in the garden: partial, scattered and full shade

Every shady spot in the garden is unique and receives different levels of sunlight. Even in the shade, the plants receive a few hours of direct sunlight each day. In partial shade, for example, there is up to 5 hours of direct sunlight, with sun and shade alternating. Scattered shadow refers to the shadow of a tree with a loose crown, a pergola or a shrub with loose growth. Full shade refers to areas in the garden where the sun shines for less than two hours a day. These are usually areas shaded by high walls or the house facade.

Not only sunlight, but also the nature of the soil, temperatures in summer and winter, and specific climatic conditions play an important role in the choice of plants. Only if they feel comfortable in the garden will they bloom wonderfullydark corners with their flowersmake it shine.

Ground cover, low plants or tall flowers – luckily there are a surprising number of flowering shade perennials that make dark corners shine.

Early bloomers

The snow roseis a true survivor who rings in the New Year with its white flowers. Flowering begins in December and ends in April. A suitable location for the snow rose is a place under a deciduous tree with a light crown or in places protected from the wind next to the house facade or in the warm shade of the wooden fence.

Alsothe Astilbefeels particularly comfortable in the shade of a tree. It thrives best in partial shade, but can also thrive in full shade without any problems. Their pink flowers brighten up even the darkest corner.

Real lungwortis a bee-friendly tree that produces countless purple flowers from March to May. Bee-friendly, native and super robust – the tree has great ornamental value for the garden. As far as the location is concerned, the real lungwort is quite undemanding. It can even tolerate full shade well.

Spring flowers and ground cover

The golden strawberryis a hardy, flowering plant that lights up the garden with its golden yellow flowers from April to June. The plant is low, forms a dense carpet and does well even without care.

The Altai-Bergeniais a hardy species that bears abundant pink flowers. The first flowers appear in early April and provide food for insects. This variety prefers shady areas in the rock garden, but can also thrive at the water's edge under light shade. An extremely robust, easy-care and long-lasting plant.

The white-flowered lipmouthenchants with its snow-white flowers. The ground cover has a thick growth and is sturdy. This makes it the perfect underplant for trees with a dense crown. Bonus point: The lip mouth displaces weeds and moss.

The Curved Larkspuris a special onebeautiful shade perennialwith light blue flowers. It also scores with a long flowering period - from April to June. The plant is hardy and undemanding, but cannot withstand wet feet. Good soil drainage is therefore an absolute must.

The forest columbineis a beautiful wild perennial that produces its blue flowers as early as April. It provides food and protection for native insects. The perennial is well adapted to the German climate and feels particularly comfortable in partially shaded places, for example under trees with a loose crown. But it can tolerate shade and full sun just as well.

The Siebolds Funkieis actually a leafy perennial, its delicate, filigree flowers adorn the shrub from June to July. The variety is ideal as a border for trees, but also feels comfortable in light shade. The hosta is hardy and can easily tolerate frost and wind.

The porcelain flowerfeels most comfortable in sunny and partially shaded places. A place protected from the wind next to dry stone walls or in the shade of high stones offers the perfect conditions for magnificent flowers. The shade perennial bears its rose-pink flowers in June and July.

The blue monkshoodis a robust, long-flowering shade perennial that is protected in this country. It has numerous areas of application: as underplanting for bushes, for edges of trees, for dark corners in the cottage garden.

The outdoor gloxiniaCan thrive in the sun, but prefers semi-shady places in the garden. This type of plant is sensitive to frost and is therefore perfect for the pot garden on the balcony, where it will thrive from spring to autumn.
