All shrubs beginningsummer bloom, should be pruned in spring to shape them and promote growth. Although you could do this every year, it is also sufficient if you only do this work every 2-3 years. How do you go about this work in the ornamental garden in March?
Choose about a third of all main shoots with rough bark (no young ones with smooth bark) and cut these back to just above the ground. Be careful not to cut too many shoots! You can then remove any dried branches and thin the entire bush a little by cutting off branches that cross each other.
ThisShrubsand sub-shrubs are cut in the ornamental garden in March, among other things:
- Holy herb (necessary for rejuvenation)
- May flower bush
- Pipe bush
- Roses (radical pruning as soon as the forsythia begins to bloom; only thin out shrub and climbing roses)
- Snowball
- Weigelie
In bushes, like the cherry laurel, lavender and rhododendron, only carefully shorten damaged branches.
ImHeidegartenshorten ornamental grasses and perennials and all other summer and winter heaths. Cut these like you would lavender - leaving short stubs (about a hand's width above the ground). If you cut too short, sprouting could take longer.
DieBulb flowers, which you enjoyed with their beautiful flowers in spring, have already partly faded. Caring for them is also part of the gardening work in March/April, as in both months this means that you can remove the dead stems. However, you can leave the green leaves alone.
Divide plants
Would you like to multiply your bamboo and plant it in other places in the garden? Then make this your ownTask for the ornamental gardenin March! You can easily share this wonderful ornamental and hedge plant. A new section should have at least 2-3 stalks with root balls. Don't forget oneUse rhizome barrier, otherwise this plant will spread uncontrollably throughout the garden.
What else can you share?
- Ground cover(You can take so-called sods from an overgrown carpet of plants, which you can then divide into small individual parts and plant)
- Seggen(Always wear gloves when handling grass as the blades can be very sharp)
- snowdropimmediately after flowering; then immediately plant again at the same depth as beforenotfertilize)
What can you plant and transplant?
You still have until the end of March to plant a new oneHedge. Bare-rooted specimens can also be planted in spring if you missed autumn.
If you don't have one yetBamboobut are considering it, now is the perfect time to plant it. This plant produces runners diligently, but this is not exactly an advantage. This causes it to spread uncontrollably throughout the garden. For this reason, a rhizome barrier is a must.
Ornamental gardening tips in March: Feel free to plant these flowers too:
- The buttercup(Let the tubers soak in water for a few hours, then plant them in the bed approx. 5 cm deep and at a distance of 15 cm from each other)
- Winterlinge(during or shortly after flowering, which may be over before March)
Transplanting
Has this shrub been bothering you in this part of the garden for some time? Now is your chance to change his place. You can plant both summer-green shrubs and trees that are not older than 3 years, taking as large a ball of soil as possible. Then replant them in their chosen spot and water generously.
Notice: Forsythia can still tolerate a change in location even after 4 or even 5 years.
The ornamental garden in March – fertilization
It is also time to provide the plants with important nutrients to give them strength to sprout and produce flowers. This important step for the ornamental garden in March comes after you have trimmed the plants and removed weeds from all the beds. It's best to use a slow-release fertilizer that you work into the soil of the beds.
Don’t forget the onion flowers either. If you have noticed that the number of flowers has decreased or that they are sprouting more sparsely, this could be a sign that they are lacking nutrients. Especially nutrient-requiring onion flowers likeDaffodils, tulips and hyacinthsare at risk and can be supplied with complete mineral fertilizer every few years in March. But use it sparingly.
Fertilizing the tulips in spring also increases the chances that they will sprout again next year.
Prevent pests
A mild winter is particularly beneficialSpread of snailsand you will probably find these here and there in the beds in March. Perennials that sprout early are at risk and should therefore be protected. Slug pellets are your helper in an emergency if you distribute them in good time (around the plants or along the bed). This step also prevents its spread in the summer.
