Spring is the right time to prefer certain crops. This also includes zucchini. We explain how you prefer the zucchini and how you can easily sow them in the greenhouse or on the windowsill.
Prefer zucchini: Why the young plants feel comfortable on the windowsill
Zucchini are one of the easiest vegetables to care for. So that you can enjoy them in the summer, you should now either grow the vegetables on the windowsill or sow them directly in the garden. Theneed zucchininamely one and a half to two months until they are ready to harvest in the vegetable patch.
When is the right time to prefer zucchini?
From mid-April you can grow the zucchini on the windowsill. You need a pot with a diameter of 6 – 7 cm.
Prefer zucchini: Which soil should you use?
Fill the pots with lean potting soil (the soil is ideal for herbs). The seeds contain many nutrients, so you do not need to additionally fertilize the soil. Later, when the seedlings emerge, you can repot them. Use a nutrient-rich organic vegetable soil with a high nitrogen content. Additionally provide the young plants with liquid fertilizer that contains phosphorus and potassium. They are very important for the growth of seedlings.
Prefer zucchini: The right temperature promotes germination
The room temperature in the next few weeks should be between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, check the soil regularly and water the plants if necessary. The potting soil should always be fresh to moderately moist. With good care, the young plants emerge after about 12 days. You should water the plants regularly during germination. However, be sure to avoid waterlogging.
Repot the young plants
When the young plants form two to three leaves, then it is the right time to prick them out and repot them. Proceed as follows:
- First, carefully dig out the zucchini with a spoon. Always be careful not to damage the roots.
- Fill a slightly larger pot halfway with garden soilplants in the groundplant and cover the roots with garden soil.
- Water generously and place in a bright spot out of direct sunlight.
- Water the young plants regularly until around mid-May.
When to plant the early plants in the garden?
As soon as the night frosts are over, i.e. from around mid-May, the early plants can be planted in the vegetable patch. An important requirement is that the ground is frost-free and that there have been no temperatures below freezing at night in the last two weeks. Choose a sunny day for planting.
The perfect location is in the sun and protected from the wind. You should leave a minimum distance of 120 cm from other plants so that the zucchini can grow in peace. You need at least 2 plants per vegetable patch.
You can also plant the zucchini in pots as long as they have a minimum volume of 35 liters. This means that it can also be grown on the balcony. If you want to plant the vegetables in raised beds, you should choose the right variety in advance.
Sow zucchini in the garden
If you want to save yourself the trouble, you can sow the zucchini directly in the garden. The same rules apply: When sowing, choose a sunny and wind-protected place in the garden. Dig holes about 5 cm deep at a distance of one meter from other plants, plant the seeds in the soil, cover with a mixture of garden soil and compost and water generously. Of course, you can add a slow-release fertilizer to the garden soil instead of compost. Water the vegetables generously with rainwater.
Mid-May is the optimal time for planting the vegetable patch. Nighttime temperatures should no longer drop below 0 degrees Celsius.
In the next few weeks you should never let the soil dry out. The zucchini prefer moist soil. At the same time, it must have good drainage, otherwise the roots can rot. With good care, the zucchini are ready to harvest in mid to late July.
Zucchini is one of the most popular vegetables for the home garden. They take up a lot of space, but are productive plants. You can sow the vegetables directly in the bucket, in the raised or vegetable bed or at home on the windowsill and then plant the seedlings after the Ice Saints in mid-May.
