If you have decided that you no longer want to use your swimming pool and would like to fill it up, we ask you to think again about another option first. It is ideal for creating a swimming pond. It doesn't matter how big the pool is. The larger it is, the more natural the pond ultimately appears. Today we would like to show you how you can create a garden pond in the pool so that you have a new oasis of well-being.
Advantages of a garden pond in the pool
The idea is particularly practical if, as already mentioned, you had decided to get rid of the swimming pool anyway and also dream of a pond in the garden. Building a swimming pond can save you money in many ways. The swimming pool needs a lot to be maintained.
Energy saving
On the one hand, there are the electricity costs. The pump that keeps the pool clean has to be switched on regularly, which of course also has an impact on the bills. If pool lamps or other accessories such as fountains or small robots are added to clean the bottom, the numbers quickly rise every year. If you design a swimming pond instead, there are minimal maintenance costs to consider.
Cost-effective alternative
In addition, there is the annual filling of the pool with water, but also the chemicals for cleaning the water. If you create a garden pond in the pool, you will no longer have these expenses. You only invest once to convert the swimming pool into a pond, to fill it once and to decorate it with stones and plants. This makes the pond a favorable element in the garden.
Use of rainwater
To save on water costs when filling the pond, you can even use rainwater when you create the garden pond in the pool. To do this, you can collect the water in barrels or expand the gutter to create a new pond. For this purpose, however, it must be fully set up. The whole thing takes a little more time, but it's worth it if you're not in a hurry.
No construction work necessary
Since you've already dug for the pool, you can now save for another excavator. If you didn't integrate the swimming pool there, but in another location, you would first have to dig again. Not only does this cost money, but it also sometimes damages the garden if the excavator has to drive over the lawn.
Design of the pond: foil or tiles?
If you want to make the pond look as natural as possible, the typical blue of a pool should of course be changed. You may need a fish-friendly paint. You are welcome to use a special pond liner. This is simply placed over the pool and clamped to the edge of the pond with earth and stones so that it cannot slip.
Use of tiles
Is your swimming pool covered with tiles and you don't want to invest additionally in a liner? Then just leave it with the tiles when you create the garden pond in the pool. Over time, these become covered with algae and take on a natural green color. This look of an abandoned pool can even look very romantic. The tiles are best coated with a so-called “liquid pond liner”. Existing leaks are covered at the same time.
Establish shallow water zones
If you create the garden pond in the pool, keep in mind that there must be shallow water zones. For this you can use existing steps that are located within the pool. If the swimming pool was used with a ladder, you should remove it and fill the pond at any point. For this purpose, for example, stones can be used or sand that is under the film.
Different levels
These shallow areas are required by many aquatic plants to receive sufficient sunlight. This also ensures that animals can easily crawl out of the water. Otherwise there is a risk that they will drown. Ultimately, you want to create a comfortable environment for the animals so that the pond appears as natural as possible. So don't forget this step when you create the garden pond in the pool.
Animals in the pond
Once the pond is finished, many animals such as frogs and microorganisms will quickly settle. In addition, if you create a garden pond in the pool, you can also put fish in it. There are many different species on offer that will feel very comfortable in this environment. The classic goldfish is just one possible representative. Koi fish are also very popular.
Choose suitable fish
It is important that you tell the dealer the size of your new pond so that he can offer you the right type and quantity of fish. No fish will feel comfortable in a crowded pond. Feel free to combine different fish with each other to create an interesting mix.
Plants for the garden pond
All species that you would use for a normal garden pond are suitable as plants. It is best to use the higher levels at the edge of the pond for planting. The deep spots may turn out to be too deep. It is also important here that you find out about suitable plants from the dealer in advance.
Swim in the pond
Something we would also like to mention is that you don't lose the swimming pool with the new pond. If you like swimming in the lake or pond, you can now do so in your ownown gardendo. If you create the garden pond in the pool, you still have a wonderful opportunity to provide refreshment in the hot summer.
Expand pool
If you don't want to do without the pool completely, you can keep its shape and instead expand it outwards and create water beds, so to speak. However, you do not use chemicals to clean the pool. These damage the aquatic plants. Ponds have the great property that they clean and disinfect themselves. This means you still get a clean pool that is also a pond.
Swimming ponds are very popular and an increasingly popular alternative to pools that are overloaded with chemicals. When you create a garden pond in the pool, you are doing something good for the environment by reducing energy costs, saving water, avoiding chemicals and providing a perfect habitat for animals and microorganisms without losing any of the benefits.
Pond with waterfall
Calm waters can have the disadvantage that they serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which quickly become a nuisance in summer. You can limit this problem by simply creating some “turbulence” in the water. A small waterfall in the middle of the pond makes the water more turbulent and therefore unattractive to many insects. In this way you also supply the water with oxygen if it doesn't rain for a long time.
fountain
If you love the sound of splashing water, you can simply add a fountain instead of an elaborate waterfall. If you are creating a garden pond in the pool, find a shallower spot in which to place the fountain. There are also solar-powered models, so you can even save electricity.
Design with footbridge and bridge
You can make the new pond look particularly authentic by adding a small footbridge or even a bridge. You can sunbathe on it and jump into the water. Come up with various accessories and decorations of this kind to make the pleasant area even more comfortable.
Individual design
Let your imagination run wild when designing. Whether you want to plant it romantically and lushly or just here and there for a more modern style, whether you want to add fish or prefer to swim in it - the decision is entirely yours. However, feel free to use our examples as inspiration!
