Your caulk's ability to hold surfaces together may diminish as dirt or mold gradually builds up around it.
Removing silicone – helpful tips and remedies
Take the time to remove and replace the silicone in your bathroom if you are renovating your space or just want to give the tiles a new look. A new silicone not only makes your bathroom appear cleaner and tidier, but also ensures that your surfaces are properly bonded together so that dirt, limescale and mold cannot penetrate. When should I renew the silicone sealant?
The sealant needs to be replaced if it curls up or if it can be pulled off with your fingers. If the old caulk has mold on it that you can't remove, or if it bubbles when it comes into contact with water, it's time to replace it.
Clean the bathroom first
If mold or other residue remains after cleaning the tub or shower, it's best to thoroughly scrub the tiles around the area before you begin. All the cleaning products and home remedies you normally usefor a bathroomuse are sufficient. To create a clear and safe work environment, you should put all bottles, cosmetics and personal items out of the way before beginning the procedure.
Heat old sealant
Take a hair dryer or portable heater and heat the pre-existing caulk. The heat softens it and makes it easier to peel off. To avoid melting, use the lowest heat setting you can. For best results, redirect the hot air in a back and forth motion while heating the old caulk for 30 to 40 seconds.

Remove silicone by hand or with home remedies
Once your bathroom is nice and clean, you can start removing the silicone. There are two ways to do this: by hand or using a silicone sealant remover. There are also various things you can use to soften the silicone caulk. The simplest and cheapest include:
- Vinegar (acetic acid is one of the components of the silicone itself, which you can easily recognize by the unpleasant smell that arises when applied)
- Alcohol
- WD-40
- Acetone (used as a solvent)
- Mineral spirits
You can first cut the existing silicone lengthwise. Be careful not to damage the surfaces you are cutting against. To remove the caulk, you will need a sharp blade or putty knife. It's best to put on thick gloves to protect your hands. Use the knife to scrape the width of the caulk. An angled handle on the knife makes removal easier. The loose caulk should separate from the surface. If the caulk still cannot be removed, try using heat again and repeat this step.
If you're less inclined to DIY, using a caulk remover may be an easier option. Simply apply the remover to the existing sealant and leave for 2 to 3 hours, unless the remover instructions recommend a longer exposure time. If you choose to use silicone remover, it will help soften and dissolve the old sealant before you remove it, making it much easier to remove. However, it is still advisable to use a scraper or stripping tool.
Remove residues
After using a knife or a special removal tool, residues of the sealant will most likely remain on the surface. Using a putty knife or razor blade will remove most of the fine residue, but there will still be some fine residue left. To remove the last remaining silicone, use mineral spirits with a cloth or kitchen sponge for stubborn areas. You can also use a homemade water and vinegar solution: Mix 1 part vinegar with 2 parts water. Apply the solution and leave it on for 20 minutes.
