After five years to design and build the project, the architects from Chris Dyson Architects have completed this apartment in central London. It is a renovation and expansion of an existing building that previously housed an industrial space. The architects called the apartment “The Cooperage” and designed it on several levels. They expanded the basement and thus expanded the living space. A free-standing steel staircase in black connects the different floors of the apartment and is also an original element of the interior.
The space the architects had at their disposal was limited and did not correspond to a typical apartment. This fact can be attributed to the fact that the building was built in the 1900s and functioned as an industrial space at that time. The designers have turned the interior space into an advantage and created a cozy, open interior in the popularIndustrial Styledesigned. This is supported by the free-standing steel staircase in the middle of the apartment, the rough concrete look for the floor, and the double-height brick wall in the open living room.
The exceptional apartment enjoys a large amount of natural light emanating from the wide skylights. The designers opted for an open living concept in which the living rooms share a common area, while the bedrooms are private. Therefore, these are located on the upper levels of the apartment and have private bathrooms.
To make the apartment more comfortable, the architects came up with various optionsElements in furnishingset. There is a natural atmosphere in the dining area, which is achieved thanks to the green wall with a double height. A vintage chandelier further deviates from the industrial style and adds a retro feel to the room.
The kitchen, on the other hand, is furnished in a minimalist style, with the walls, worktops and base cabinets kept white. The extractor hood creates a contrast to the predominantly white kitchen and radiates bronze. A beautiful element of the furnishings is thelarge brick wallwhich is in harmony with the external facade of the building. To make the atmosphere in the living room even cozier, the designers opted for a free-standing fireplace and a colorful carpet in the living area.
The free-standing steel staircase that connects the different levels is combined with wooden steps. Its black color stands out strongly in the room and looks like a modern accent with an industrial touch. The stairs start in the converted basement and lead to the cozy roof terrace, which offers wonderful views of South London.
