We explain how to create the pretty shape for the Nutella star from puff pastry.

Only 4 ingredients for the recipe

Since you can easily get ready-made and frozen puff pastry in any supermarket, preparing this dessert is particularly simple (and, above all, quick). Otherwise you just need an egg, Nutella (or other nougat/chocolate cream) and optionally powdered sugar for sprinkling.

Of course, baking fans can also make their own puff pastryYou can make your own chocolate cream. But if you want to conjure up a last-minute snack, simply use the delicious ready-made products. Now let's get to the Nutella star recipe with puff pastry:

Make your own Nutella star from puff pastry

First defrost the dough according to the package instructions. We recommend defrosting it slowly and gently overnight in the refrigerator, as cold dough is easier to work with. This is still possible a few hours before preparation, but you will do yourself a favor if you put it in the freezer for another 10 minutes before preparation. You can cut the nutella star out of puff pastry and then store it in the fridge if you want to prepare it for an event, for example the day before.

  • To make the Nutella flower from puff pastry, the dough must be cut into a round shape. For this you can use, for example, the bottom of a springform pan, a large pizza plate or a large bowl. Place them on the spread dough and cut along the edge with a sharp knife. You need a total of two circles of the same size per puff pastry star.
  • Spread the Nutella or another nougat cream on one of these two circles.
  • Place the other circle on top.

Now we cut and twist:

  • Place a glass in the center of the circle. This area should be left out when cutting.
  • Now use a knife to cut the dough into 16 equal segments (like a cake). First quarter it, then halve these quarters to make eighths and the eighths again to make the 16 sections.
  • Always take two of these sections between your fingers and twist them in opposite directions (one turn). Leave the ends slightly turned outwards and press them together to seal the two layers of dough.
Tipp:Depending on how often you screw in the pieces, the appearance of the star changes. Furthermore, there do not necessarily have to be 16 segments. The dessert also looks wonderful with 8 star points. So you can certainly experiment a little.

In this state, you can cover the puff pastry flower with cling film and store it in the refrigerator.

Now you can bake the star

Break an egg and brush the resulting puff pastry sun with it. This guarantees that the baked dough does not become too dry. Preheat the oven and bake as directed on the package. Then take the Nutella star made of puff pastry out of the oven and let it cool down for a while. Then you can dust it with powdered sugar.

If you want, you can use a topping instead of powdered sugar. For example, icing works well and you can refine it with any flavor (lemon, orange, vanilla, rum, bourbon). You can decorate the puff pastry flower as you wish using frosting and a piping bag.

Other variations for the Nutella star made from puff pastry

You can prepare the puff pastry flower with Nutella or fill it in another way. If you remember our puff pastry Christmas tree, then you probably remember that one option was to use jam instead.

Would you rather have it savory? Then simply use pesto or a filling made of cheddar, bacon and onion, which you refine with balsamic vinegar and brown sugar. This type of dough is known for being so versatile while retaining its airy, fluffy properties. Perfect for any occasion!

Pizza or other dough can also be used. The only important thing is that it is suitable for rolling out (i.e. not a dough that is too sticky or crumbly) and that it can be cut without falling apart.
