The exotic fruit is often used to decorate desserts, but also tastes really good in all kinds of dishes. Is Physalis healthy?
Andean cherry, Jew cherry, Andean berry, Cape gooseberry. No, we didn't list four different fruits because they are always the physalis. The small berry is known by many names and is believed to come from the South American areas of Peru and Chile. Physalis contains many important vitamins and nutrients and is therefore an excellent addition to a balanced diet. The exotic fruit stands out above all because of its high vitamin C content - a total of 28 mg per 100 grams. And with only 52 calories and 1 gram of fat per 100 grams, it is a very low-calorie fruit. It also contains large amounts of beta carotene as well as calcium, potassium and iron.
The Aztecs already used the berries of Physalis in natural medicine for various ailments. It is said to have antirheumatic and antipyretic properties and have a calming effect on the stomach and intestinal mucosa. Therefore, it can be guaranteed that Physalis is healthy and can support the body in its natural functioning. However, we must mention that the exotic fruit should only be consumed when ripe. If it is still immature, you should stay away from it because then it is actually poisonous.
How to eat physalis?
The Physalis tastes sweet and sour, fresh and slightly bitter and reminds us of pineapple and gooseberries. The berries are covered in a sticky and washable layer and contain many small seeds that you can eat. Would you like to try some Physalis recipes but don't know how to eat and use the fruit? Here is a short guide:
- First, remove the leaves just before eating and wash the berries thoroughly under running water to remove the sticky layer. They should not be squeezed as they are very sensitive to pressure.
- Pat the physalis dry and it's ready to eat - not that complicated, right?
- A little tip: The physalis can be kept dry in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks - if it is stored damp, it will mold very quickly.
Physalis recipes: Delicious jam with mango
There is hardly anything more beautiful than homemade and delicious fruit spreads that delight usthe breakfastsweeten. Classics like strawberry jam are always delicious, but how about an equally delicious and fruity physalis jam with mango? And here comes the recipe for this delicacy!
Ingredients:
- 200 Gramm Physalis
- 2 medium mangoes
- 200 ml freshly squeezed orange juice
- 400 grams of preserving sugar (2:1)
Preparation:
- Wash the leaves of the physalis and rinse the fruits with water.
- Remove the flesh of the mangoes and place them in a large bowl along with the physalis.
- Puree with the hand blender and place in a pot.
- Add the orange juice and preserving sugar and mix well.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes.
- Pour the solid and still hot jam into sterilized jars, turn them upside down for 10-20 minutes and your Physalis jam is ready!
Spicy Physalis Chutney Recipe
Whether from zucchini, tomatoes orWatermelon peels– Chutneys can be made from almost any type of fruit and vegetable. Sweet and sour, spicy and wonderfully delicious - this Physalis chutney recipe with chili is the perfect dip that you can enjoy with meat, fish or any appetizers and snacks.
Ingredients:
- 350 Gramm Physalis
- 2 red onions
- 1 root Paprika
- 1 yellow pepper
- 1 red pepperoni
- 1 small piece of fresh ginger
- 50 ml white wine vinegar
- 80 grams of brown sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation:
- Remove the leaves of the physalis and wash and halve the fruits.
- Wash the onions, ginger, chili and peppers and cut into small cubes.
- Put the sugar in a large saucepan and let it caramelize slightly over medium heat, stirring constantly.
- Add onions and physalis and simmer for 1-2 minutes.
- Add the paprika, chili and ginger and deglaze with the white wine vinegar. Simmer uncovered until the vinegar has boiled away.
- Remove the pot from the heat, season with salt and pepper and your Physalis Chutney is ready!
Physalis recipes hearty: Exotic pasta with lime sauce

Ingredients for 4 servings:
- 500 grams of whole wheat pasta
- 400 Gramm Physalis
- 4 limes
- 20-30 grams of fresh ginger
- 4 THE Avocado Öl
- 50 grams of agave syrup or honey
- 250 ml Sahne
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation:
- Remove, wash and halve the leaves of the physalis.
- Wash the limes, dry them, finely grate the peel and squeeze out the juice.
- Peel the ginger and chop it finely.
- Cook the pasta al dente according to the package instructions.
- Add avocado oil to a wok and heat over medium heat.
- Fry the ginger for 2-3 minutes and deglaze with the lime juice.
- Add the agave syrup and cream and simmer for 2-3 minutes.
- Add the physalis and noodles and simmer for another 2 minutes.
- Sprinkle the lime peel over it, season with salt and pepper and enjoy!

Strawberries and Physalis Cake Recipe

Ingredients:
- 250 Gramm Physalis
- 150 grams of strawberries
- 70 grams of wheat flour
- 300 ml milk
- 3 Owner, Gr. L
- 140 grams of granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp Vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- Powdered sugar for sprinkling
Preparation:
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and lightly grease a baking pan with butter.
- Place milk, eggs, flour, salt, vanilla extract and 90 grams of sugar in a mixing bowl and mix well with a hand mixer.
- Pour 2/3 of the dough into the baking pan and bake for 10 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and spread the physalis and berries on top.
- Sprinkle with the remaining sugar and spread the dough over it.
- Place back in the oven and bake for 50-60 minutes or until golden brown.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar and voilà – your Physalis cake is ready!
Creamy Physalis cake – recipe with quark
Have you invited the girls over for coffee at your place at the weekend and would you like to treat them to a delicious dessert? Then this Physalis cake recipe with curd cream is just right for you!
Ingredients:
- 150 grams of wheat flour
- 50 grams of cornstarch
- 300 grams of granulated sugar
- 4 Owner
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 pinch of salt
- 8 pieces of sheet gelatine
- 1 lemon
- 300 Gramm Physalis
- 600 grams of curd
- 200 grams of whipped cream
- Powdered sugar for sprinkling
Preparation:
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and line a baking pan with baking paper.
- Carefully separate the eggs and beat the egg whites with a hand mixer until stiff.
- Gradually add 50 grams of sugar and continue beating until you get a thick and shiny mixture.
- Place the egg yolks with 150 grams of sugar and salt in another bowl and stir until light - about 5 minutes.
- Sift the flour, cornstarch and baking powder over it and carefully fold in half of the ice cream with a whisk.
- Add the remaining ice cream and mix briefly.
- Pour the dough into the baking pan and bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
- Allow to cool completely and carefully cut into 2 layers.
- Remove the physalis from the casing, wash and drain.
- Soak gelatin in a bowl of cold water.
- Grate the lemon peel and squeeze out the juice.
- Mix the quark with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and the remaining sugar until smooth.
- Squeeze out the gelatine and dissolve it in a saucepan over low heat for 2 minutes. Add about 2 tablespoons of quark cream, stir in and add the mixture to the remaining cream.
- Beat the cream until stiff with a hand mixer and add it to the quark cream.
- Spread half of the cream on the first base, cover with Physalis and spread the remaining cream over it.
- Cover with the second layer and place the Physalis cake in the refrigerator for at least 5 hours. Enjoy!
Physalis Eis Rezept

Ingredients:
- 4 egg yolks
- 100 grams of powdered sugar
- 200 ml whole milk
- 400 ml Doppelrahm

- Puree: 500 grams of physalis and 40 grams of powdered sugar
Preparation:
- To make the puree, put the physalis and sugar in a saucepan with 20-30 ml of water and bring to the boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 4-5 minutes.
- Place in a food processor and puree until fine.
- Strain through a sieve and let cool completely.
- Place egg yolks, sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl and beat until fluffy.
- Heat the milk and cream in a saucepan over medium heat and add to the egg mixture, stirring constantly.
- Return to the pot and simmer until the mixture has thickened.
- Put the vanilla cream and the Physalis puree into the ice cream maker and prepare the Physalis ice cream according to the manufacturer's instructions. Enjoy!
