Build your own bed table – DIY storage table for bed

A side table for bed is a truly functional piece of furniture that can add to the comfort while lounging in bed. It serves as a breakfast table and at the same time as a storage space, especially when you want to do something quickly on your laptop or watch a film while lying down. You can build a bed table yourself relatively easily, as the construction is uncomplicated and, however, should not have a large load-bearing capacity.

Build your own bed table and design it individually

It's always nice when you can create and personalize one or another piece of furniture and decoration yourself. This brings a fresh touch to the room design and ensures a truly individual touch. Alternatively, you can use basic furniture, like some ofIkea, simply spice up, edit and repurpose.

A side table for bed from the Malm collection is available from Ikea in white or black. The simple, straight-line design appears very unobtrusive, which is why it is very popular. However, you can redesign it or make one yourself.

The bed bridge is very practical and offers a stable surface that can be used as an alternative to the bedside tables. Thanks to the functional wheels, it can also be moved over the bed when needed.

To illustrate, you can only afford breakfast in bed or simply more free time that you like to spend in bed on the weekend or during your vacation. Then the bed bridge is simply pushed to the side next to a wall and used as additional storage space.

The bed bridge is basically a narrow console table, the length of which corresponds to the width of the bed and frames it. There are no additional shelves under the table top or any drawers. Castors offer the flexibility to easily move and reposition the table in one movement.

Build your own bed table – simple DIY instructions

You can build a bed table yourself and adapt it to your bed size. Previous craftsmanship knowledge is a prerequisite for the best possible results, but is not a must, as the construction consists of three wooden panels and should not have great load-bearing capacity. But the side table should be stable.

Which materials from the tree species are needed for the craft project:

  • three wooden panels - two of the same size for the sides and one for the vertical shelf
  • screws
  • 4 St. Shop connector
  • 4 St. Rolls
  • Drill, cordless screwdriver, sandpaper or grinder
  • Paint or glaze

You should decide the size yourself. The best thing to do is lie down in bed and think about how high you want the table top to be. (There should be enough space above your legs when lying down.) Measure from the floor to the desired point and also the width of the bed with the bed frame. Allow 10 centimeters on each side, a total of 20 cm. This means that the bed bridge can be easily set up, moved and without any bed linen disturbing you.

Panels can be cut to size at your local hardware store. Alternatively, you can opt for plywood panels or MDF, although a variety of veneers and colors are also available. Further treatment of the panels, such as sanding and painting, is then not necessary.

The stable construction is achieved using sustainable angle connectors. These form a right angle with the two plates and enable stable standing. Note where the fasteners will be attached and make pilot holes in these locations. This will make your work much easier later when putting together the design.

The size of the angle connectors determines how durable the table will be. Our tip: get advice from a hardware store or take some that are at least 10 x 10 cm.

You should attach the rollers to the bottom of the side plates. Get some according to the thickness of the wooden panels and fix them with the screws.

The size of the rollers depends primarily on how loaded they are and what type of flooring they should be moving on. Choose the right ones according to your spatial situation.

Basically, the set-up table consists of three panels – a storage area and two sides. These are assembled using angle connectors. Use a cordless screwdriver and also screws for wood material according to the thickness of the wood panels.

You can either color the wooden panels beforehand or later when the table is completely upright. We recommend water-based paints for wood or water-based glazes that look as natural as possible. Design the color according to your individual taste or if you have a wooden floor or furniture made of wood, glaze your bed bridge in a similar look.

If you really want to give your side table individuality, wallpaper it. Use sturdy, sturdy fabric, such as linen or other upholstery fabric with a pattern. You can also use water-based wood glue as a suitable adhesive. Before upholstering, roughen the surface of the table and prime it once with just the wood glue. This pre-treatment promises that the upholstery material will last longer.

The great thing is when you put something together for yourself that really fits your individual style. Modern or vintage, playful or simple design is up to you!

The storage table finds space not only in the bedroom, but also behind the sofa or as a console table in the hallway. This piece of furniture is really multi-faceted and if it is not used properly as a bed table, it will certainly find another practical use.

You can also have a bed breakfast table made to measure or, if you buy new furniture for the bedroom, you can also think about a storage table.

If you want to put together a bed bridge with your own strength, you should first consider the width of the bed. Allow a distance so that the bed table can move freely.

If you don't have any free space next to the bed, you don't have to do without an overbed table. One, like the one in the picture, is only on one side of the bed and offers additional mobile storage space in the sleeping area.
