Acrylic paints and poster paints are probably the best option, especially if you want to get opaque colors quickly. To increase adhesion, you can roughen the surface of the chestnuts a little in advance with very fine sandpaper. After you have painted the chestnuts with acrylic or poster paint, you can finally seal them with clear varnish and give them a shine. You can also use spray paints.
And can you paint chestnuts with watercolors? Yes, it is possible, but you should not expect strong and opaque colors. However, they are well suited for interesting color gradients. Just experiment with what you have and see for yourself what you are most happy with.
Painting chestnuts – which pencils?
If you want to draw finer lines, patterns and motifs, you can either use the colors mentioned above and a fine brush or even easier: a pen. But which one? In principle, all pens that work on smooth surfaces and are waterproof are suitable. Eddings and paint markers, for example.

Painting chestnuts for Halloween
In addition to the classic pumpkin, you can design the chestnuts in a variety of ways for Halloween. If you are looking for ideas that are suitable for children to paint chestnuts, you can use this festival as an inspiration. We find the eyes very funnyand monsters, for which chestnut peel is also used. It should be slightly split, or you can cut it and glue it in place.
For the eye, you need to paint the visible part of the chestnut with white paint. When this is dry, paint another black pupil and red veins. If you want, you can also paint slit-shaped pupils for an even spookier look. The spines of the shell automatically represent eyelashes. If you want, you can also color the shells.
The little monsters are also quick to make. And here too you can paint the chestnuts first, but you don't have to. The monsters will also look great in their natural color. Draw faces in the open area. Add the finishing touches to the faces with a few sharp canine teeth. The spines of the shells do the rest again.
Glue and glitter
Would you like a little glamor? You get it with glitter! Although no paints or pens were used for this idea, we think it is still a kind of painting and definitely needs to be shown. Apply liquid glue anywhere (for example, on the bright spot of the chestnut) and sprinkle glitter over it. Let the glue dry, tap off any excess glitter, and you're done! You can also create small motifs in this way.
There are also colors that glitter. So if you don't bother with sprinklingwith glitterIf you don't want to have glitter lying around everywhere afterwards, you can use these colors instead. Or how about glittery nail polish?
Paint chestnuts white and decorate with glitter
The glitter can also be shown off wonderfully if you first paint the chestnuts with white paint. Let it dry and then use a liquid glue as described above and then apply the glitter or sprinkle the glitter directly onto the still wet paint and let it dry. Afterwards, sealing with clear or hair varnish may be necessary.
Golden chestnut decoration
The autumn fruits also get an elegant look if you spray or paint them with golden paint. In this way, you can paint just a few of the chestnuts and use them to set accents in a bowl of uncolored fruit, or you can simply color them all and create a completely golden decoration. You can also color and add other typical autumn fruits and elements gold. For example, pine cones and autumn leaves are suitable. Or combine different metallic colors with each other – gold, silverand copperfor example, create a beautiful interaction.
