Anyone who has a little princess at home knows it very well when she runs around like wild animals or plays in the garden, but despite the dirt, no one can take her tulle skirt away. Well, unfortunately it has to go into the washing machine every now and then or the child outgrows its clothes and at least a second one is needed. However, even beginners can easily sew a tutu. It's an easy beginner's project that takes less than an hour of time and is sure to bring great joy to the little girl.
ATutucan be conjured up quickly and easily with or without sewing. Of course, the first variant looks more appealing and professional. You have the second option if you don't have a sewing machine available, but it is much more complex and takes more time. In the first instructions we show how this works. Materials required:
- Tulle – at least 90cm long and 20cm+ wide
- Rubber band
- Satin ribbon
- Sewing machine, scissors, thread, needle, etc.
The tulle is usually available by the meter and is around 150 cm wide. How many meters do you need to make a tulle skirt yourself? You would need 60 cm of it or even less if you sew the remaining pieces together. If the child is older or you want the skirt to be a little longer, more fabric will of course be needed. A piece of fabric is divided by three to get the actual width of the skirt. In this sense, for a 30 cm long skirt, at least 90 cm is required. Our tip: add another 5-10 cm.
Divide the entire piece of fabric by three and cut into three equal pieces. Sew these together on both sides to create a whole and connect them into a large ring. You should sew a tunnel on one long side. First, sew the long top edge together using either an overlock or a sewing machine. Fold this seam over, fold the waistband again and pin it in place.
Now sew along the edge where you marked with the pins. Stop just before the start of the seam and leave a gap so that you can pull the elastic band through afterwards. Now take a safety pin, attach it to the end of the elastic band and then pull it through the tunnel. If you have the waist size you want, tie it tightly or sew the two rubber ends together.
Finally, close the tunnel and, if desired, you can attach a small bow made of satin ribbon to the front. The tutu has some transparency due to the tulle. If this is not desired, you can replace the one layer of tulle with one made of opaque fabric, such as crinkle. The procedure remains the same as in the instructions above.
The tutu becomes more lush and really ballerina-like when the layers of tulle are pulled apart and ruffled. This makes it appear airier and really light, as it should be. The elastic band on the waistband can be replaced with a wide satin ribbon to make size adjustment easier. But the skirt remains a little looser and perhaps not as stable as usual. We recommend using an elastic band that is approximately 2cm wide. Measure the child's waist and cut the band 3-4cm shorter so that it stays in place and doesn't slip off when moving.

It can actually be done without a sewing machine, without sewing at all. To do this you will need several narrow strips of tulle. The more you have, the more lush and magnificent the tutu will be. As an average width of a tulle ribbon you can sew 60cm, for example. So the tulle skirt ends up being a little less than 30cm long. A wide elastic band is still needed that will circumscribe the girl's waist.
Sew the elastic together tightly to create a whole ring. Now start tying the tulle ribbons to it. Take a strip of tulle and use it to form a loop with open ends of the same length. So put it on the elastic band from the back and pull the ends through the loop. Make sure you get the loop and ends even. Continue until the elastic is full, then you have completed the first layer of tulle. Repeat several times until the skirt becomes really lush.
