Tucked into a hillside in Brentwood is the minimalist Barrington House. Thanks to its interesting and unusual shape, the residence is a true geometric highlight. The building consists of several polygons dug into the hilly terrain. Due to its green roof, “Barrington House” is almost impossible to recognize at first glance.
The green roof on the three-story “Barrington House” offers a unique view
The asymmetrical shape of the building follows the natural curve of the surrounding area and opens out to the rear onto the adjacent terrain. If you walk past the entrance gate of the “Barrington House” in Los Angeles, you will first be faced with several steps covered with artificial turf that lead to the green roof of the residence. From there you have a wonderful view of the Getty Center, a museum complex located on the mountain. The green roof not only offers a lush lawn for relaxing on sunny days, but also a terrace with a pool overlooking downtown Los Angeles.
TheHouse with green roofcovers 9,500 square meters and was designed by Californian studio Eric Rosen Architects and completed in 2015. The client's request was a couple with their two children, and the architects' goal was to dissolve the boundaries between indoor and outdoor areas.
For the “Barrington House,” the architects were influenced by 1970s artist Gordon Matta-Clark. He was inspired by his most radical project, called “Splitting,” in which a house in New Jersey was cut up with a chainsaw.
The "Barrington House" was built on the site of an old house with dark interiors and limited views of the surrounding grounds. Only a retaining wall and a swimming pool were retained from the former structure.
The indoor and outdoor areas are organized as individual cascading areas that revolve around the pool house. This creates a series of habitable indoor and outdoor spaces that make the entire residential complex a unique place.
The materials concrete, metal and glass were used inside and became oneharmonious furnishingsintertwined. What looks most unconventional, however, is its Z-shaped floor plan. The top floor houses the living room and the floor below - the bedrooms. On the lowest floor there is a storage room and a games room. Each level extends at the rear to spacious outdoor areas with fantastic views.
